On Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at approximately 2:09 p.m., Idaho State Police investigated a three-vehicle, property damage crash eastbound I84 at milepost 159.5, three miles east of Wendell.

Scott Smith, 51, of Eagle, was eastbound in a 2012 Mercedes Sprinter in a construction zone. Blanca Guerra, 26, of Blackfoot, was behind the Mercedes in a 2011 Toyota Camry. Juan Tellez, 37, of Jerome, was behind the Toyota in a 2011 Freightliner semi pulling a single trailer. The Toyota slowed for traffic in front of it. The Freightliner struck the Toyota from behind and swerved into the median, where it jackknifed. The semi came to rest completely blocking the eastbound lane and partially blocking the westbound lane. The Toyota was pushed into the Mercedes from behind. Both the Toyota and the Mercedes came to rest in the eastbound lane of travel.

All occupants were wearing seatbelts. Guerra was transported to St. Luke's Magic Valley by ground ambulance. Both eastbound and westbound lanes in the construction zone were blocked for approximately 40 minutes while crews worked to clear the scene.

Idaho State Police were assisted at the scene by the Gooding County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho Transportation Department.

The crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
