Memorial Weekend Media release

(Multi-Agency Partnership)
***For Immediate Release***
Date: May 27, 2010

Tri-State Partnerships for a Safe Memorial Day Weekend

The Idaho State Police, the Montana Highway Patrol and the Washington State Patrol have partnered in our traffic safety efforts to ensure a safe Memorial weekend for Tri-State motorists. All three agencies will have every available trooper working as we are expecting increased traffic volumes including recreational vehicles, vehicles pulling trailers and motorcycles.
All three agencies are asking for the publics cooperation to stay alert and drive with caution. Impaired driving, aggressive driving, dangerous speeds and occupant restraint violations will be strictly enforced. Please remember to buckle up, wear your motorcycle safety equipment, obey the posted speed limits and never drink and drive. With the start of summer also comes the start of the road construction season so please plan your trip accordingly and allow yourself extra time to arrive at your destination safely.
Increased law enforcement presence also increases your chance of encountering troopers on traffic stops. Please be diligent and adhere to the Move Over Law that requires motorists to move over when applicable or slow down for emergency vehicles when their lights are flashing.
Our goal is to prevent serious injury and fatal collisions during this holiday weekend. We will continue to be proactive in our efforts to keep these tragedies from occurring, but we need your help. Please report dangerous drivers as soon as you can safely do so by calling 911. In Idaho you can also call *477. Together we can all have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TRAVEL

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner and the Idaho State Police wants to remind motorists to stay safe during their travels. Many local law enforcement agencies including ISP have partnered with the Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety for the upcoming Seatbelt Mobilization Patrol. During these patrols, officers will have zero tolerance for non-seatbelt usage including passengers. According to ITD, Eastern Idaho has the lowest rate of seatbelt usage and the Mobilization Patrol is one of the keys to increase usage. Agencies will also be gearing up for extra D.U.I. patrols during the holiday weekend, so please don't drink and drive.

ISP reminds motorists to observe the "Move Over Law", which requires motorists to slow down and move over if possible when approaching a stationary Authorized Emergency Vehicle displaying flashing lights. Every year there are a number of police officers that are killed nationwide while parked on the side of the road during the course of their duties. The Move Over Law helps protect the law enforcement officers and emergency service personnel who risk their lives protecting the public.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The Idaho Transportation Department is partnering with Idaho STAR and the Idaho Highway Safety Coalition for Motorcycle Safety to encourage drivers to be extra alert and cautious when driving to help keep motorcycle riders safe. The Seatbelt Mobilization, Move Over Law and Motorcycle Safety Awareness are all part of Idaho's "Toward Zero Deaths - Every Life Counts" campaign.

Idaho State Police - Targeting Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT)

The Idaho State Police are cracking down on cars and trucks that drive aggressively on Idaho roadways. On May 19th and 20th, ISP will be working in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies and local trucking companies to stop and cite drivers that tailgate, speed, cut off other drivers, or make unsafe lane changes.

The TACT Project was developed to help reduce the number of people that are injured and killed each year on Idaho roadways in crashes involving commercial vehicles. Current Idaho crash data shows that in over 75% of the crashes involving commercial vehicles, the crash was caused due to the action of one or more of the involved drivers. ISP hopes that by educating drivers about how their actions can impact others will help reduce the number of crashes and improve the safety on Idaho roadways. Since ISP began using the TACT Project, crashes in the target areas have been reduced by as much as 60%. The effectiveness of the TACT program has gained support from both the trucking industry, as well as other safety agencies.

According to Lieutenant Reese, Deputy Commander of the Idaho State Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Section, "We will consider our program a success if what we do stops even just one crash from happening. Stopping even one crash means one less person that is injured or killed, and one less family that is affected. Our goal is to make the roadways safer for everyone."

On May 07, 2010 at 7:20 a.m., Idaho State Police investigated a two-vehicle injury crash that involved a school bus.

David W. Falkingham, age 61 of Idaho Falls, was traveling southbound on I15 at mile marker 94, across the Snake River bridge. Falkingham drove into the left lane in an attempt to pass a West Jefferson School District school bus also traveling southbound. Falkingham lost control of his 1999 Toyota Tacoma and struck the cement barrier on the left shoulder. Upon impact, the Toyota slid into the right lane and collided with the front of the school bus. The Toyota traveled off the road and overturned. The school bus, being driven by Peggy Peterson, age 59 of Terreton, struck the right guardrail in an attempt to avoid hitting the Toyota. The bus traveled off the right side of the road and down an embracement.

None of the children riding on the school bus, nor Peterson, were injured in the crash. Falkingham was transported by ground ambulance to Bingham Memorial Hospital for minor injuries. Speed and road conditions were a factor in this crash.

This crash is still under investigation by the Idaho State Police. Trooper Nakashima was assisted at the scene by Sergeant Manning and Corporal Donahue as well as Bingham County and Blackfoot City Deputies.
