or your local District office.

Don't drive impaired. Instead, plan for a sober ride home. Your safety and the safety of others around you depend on it.

Headed into the busy July Fourth weekend, ISP will partner with approximately 60 other Idaho law enforcement agencies to staff extra patrols looking for drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety (OHS) is coordinating the effort to help keep Idaho motorists safe from the threat posed by those who drive impaired.

"Impaired driving changes lives, ends lives, and devastates families. We see those consequences in the work we do every day. That's why we're proud to join our partner agencies and add extra patrols to do all we can to keep our roads safe at a time when they're busy with traveling families." said ISP Lt. Ken Yount.

Extra DUI patrols begin Thursday, July 1st, and will continue through Thursday, July 15th.

"We know that alcohol may be part of summertime events. We need folks to simply take a few minutes and plan ahead for a designated driver and a sober ride home," said Lt. Yount. "Remember to avoid excessive use of alcohol, especially in this intense heat, and to keep alcohol away from those who are underage. This isn't about making arrests, it's about keeping families whole."

DUI arrests made statewide by Troopers with the Idaho State Police increased in 2020, from 1688 DUI arrests in 2019 to 1706 DUI arrests made last year.

The Deadly Consequences of Impaired Driving:

- Impaired driving was the cause of 1,501 crashes in 2019, resulting in 99 deaths in Idaho. There were 8,084 DUI arrests statewide in 2019 according to OHS data.
- One person in the U.S. dies every 52 minutes in an impaired driving crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

What can you do?

- Plan your safe ride home before you start drinking;
* Choose a non-drinking friend as a designated driver;
* Arrange for a ride share service or taxi.
- If you're hosting a party where alcohol will be served, serve non-alcoholic beverage options and make sure all guests leave with a sober driver;
- Always wear your seat belt - it's your best defense against impaired drivers, and;
- If you see what could be an impaired driver on the road, call *477 (*ISP) or call 911. Your actions could save a life.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Funding for extra patrols is provided by a grant from the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Thank you to these agencies for supporting ISP's efforts to keep Idaho's roadways safe.

Operation Safe Streets takes dangerous drugs and wanted fugitives off the streets of Kootenai County

IDAHO STATE POLICE NEWS RELEASE
District 1 Patrol 615 West Wilbur Ave. Coeur d'Alene, ID 83815
(208) 209-8620

For Immediate Release: 06/29/2021 03:20 p.m.
Please direct questions to the District Office

The Idaho State Police led a multi-agency high-visibility criminal apprehension operation this past week in Kootenai County aimed at taking dangerous fugitives off the streets. During the intensive four-day effort dubbed "Operation Safe Streets", about 50 officers and agents located wanted fugitives, dangerous drugs, and stolen firearms.

"We've seen a concerning increase in criminal activity connected to illegal drug use in our area, and this operation was an opportunity to prevent more from happening," said Captain John Kempf of the Idaho State Police.

"For those who would bring dangerous drugs or other criminal activity into North Idaho, we want to put them on notice that law enforcement is working together across state and city lines, and if you endanger our community, we're coming for you."

Joining ISP in Operation Safe Streets were approximately 50 officers and agents from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, Coeur d'Alene Police Department, Post Falls Police Department, Idaho Probation and Parole, and Kootenai County Probation and Parole. Also bringing interstate resources to the operation were agents from the U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Marshals, FBI, and DEA.

Operation Safe Streets ran from June 23rd through June 26th, and focused largely on criminal activity, including driving under the influence, in Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls.

"Sadly, we found more evidence of what we already knew was happening; that among drug users, fentanyl is becoming even more prevalent," said Captain Kempf. "We've seen several local families impacted by fatal drug overdoses we believe are connected to fentanyl. The amount of drugs including fentanyl that we found during this operation, we find very concerning." Said Captain Kempf.

Captain Kempf says Operation Safe Streets was a success and similar efforts will happen again. Bringing together officers and agents from around the region allows for immediate access to information and valuable additional resources.

"The goal of Operation Safe Streets is to help members of the community enjoy the July Fourth weekend and a safe North Idaho summer." Said Captain Kempf. "We appreciate the officers and members of this community for their support in making that happen."

Results from Operation Safe Streets, June 23 - 26, Kootenai County, Idaho include:

- 9 DUI Arrests;
- 9 Felony Fugitives Apprehended;
- Multiple criminal investigations are underway as a result of Operation Safe Streets including trafficking and possession of heroin,
meth, fentanyl, cocaine, illegal possession of prescription drugs, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of stolen firearms.

Have a Tip?
Anyone with information on the use or sale of illegal drugs or other criminal activity is urged to contact Idaho State Police at the Idaho Drug Tip Hotline 1-800-524-7277, or contact your nearby Idaho State Police district office or local law enforcement agency.

Idaho State Troopers placed a high focus on high speeds this past weekend in an effort to remind drivers that safe speeds save lives.

The effort was part of a Border to Border speed education and enforcement campaign coordinated by the Western States Traffic Safety Coalition (WSTSC) Friday, June 25th through Sunday, June 27th. In several western states including Idaho, fatal and serious injury crashes and speed-related vehicle rollovers have recently increased, as have citations for excessive speed.

June 25 - June 27, 2021:

- 60% of all citations written this past weekend were speed-related (212 out of 350 total).

The 212 speed-related citations included:

- 2 reckless driving charges (misdemeanors)
- 1 inattentive driving charge (m) on Interstate 90 in Shoshone County involving a driver traveling at 117 mph in an area posted for 75 mph.
- 55 Excessive Speed* citations (16 mph or over the posted limit) including:
* 4 for speeds of 100 mph or above:
- A citation to a driver on Interstate 84 in Minidoka County charged with traveling 102 mph in an area posted for 80 mph.
- 3 drivers cited in separate incidents in Bannock County for traveling 100 to 101 mph on Interstate 15.

"High speeds increase the risk and severity of crashes, and these speeds show a disregard for the driver's own safety and that of others on the road. Our goal is to keep families whole and keep people safe on our roadways. Speeding is aggressive and puts the speeding driver as well as everyone around them at risk." said Idaho State Police Lt. Jens Pattis.

"Behind the wheel, we all need to be safe and courteous. We can strengthen that message by unifying efforts with our partner agencies throughout the west. It's important to let folks know that wherever they travel, their safety and the safety of others is absolutely our priority, even if it means writing them a citation when they fail to watch their speed." Said Lt. Pattis.

Although last weekend was a period of special emphasis on the dangers of speeding, Troopers remind motorists they are on the roads every day working to educate motorists and enforce laws intended to keep people safe on Idaho's roadways.

Throughout the west, law enforcement has seen a dangerous trend in excessive speeds, including speeds of 100 mph or more.

As fewer drivers were on the roads during the COVID-19 pandemic, some who were on the roads were driving faster. In many states, citations for excessive speed have increased, as have fatal and serious injury crashes and speed-related vehicle rollovers. Some states like Idaho, saw the dangerous trend peak with an increase in fatality crashes over the recent Memorial Day weekend.

To help prevent serious injury crashes during the busy summer travel season, law enforcement agencies across the west are joining forces with a unified message reminding drivers that safe speeds are essential to keeping people safe.

"Our goal is to keep families whole and keep people safe on our roadways. Speeding is aggressive and puts the speeding driver as well as everyone around them at risk. It's one of the most dangerous things a driver can do," said Idaho State Police Lt. Jens Pattis.

"Behind the wheel, we all need to be safe and courteous. And we're strengthening that message by unifying efforts with partner agencies throughout the west to let folks know that wherever they travel, their safety and the safety of others is absolutely our priority, even if it means writing them a citation when they fail to watch their speed."

June 25 - 27: BORDER TO BORDER; WESTERN STATES SPEED EDUCATION AND ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN

The Idaho State Police is a member of the Western States Traffic Safety Coalition (WSTSC). WSTSC members will participate in a coordinated speed education and enforcement campaign starting on Friday, June 25th through Sunday, June 27th.

The dates for the campaign are intended to remind drivers of safe behavior headed into the busy July Fourth holiday.

"The Idaho State Police and all our Coalition partners hope our combined efforts raise public awareness of the importance of safe driving and actually encourage drivers of all ages on all roadways to think about their behavior. Motorists need to help us help them by driving at safe speeds, focusing on the road, and remembering that their safety and the safety of others is in their hands." Said Lt. Pattis.

CITATIONS FOR EXCESSIVE SPEED HAVE INCREASED:

Over the past year, Idaho State Police have witnessed more people driving at excessive speeds, and the number of citations and criminal charges increased, even while fewer drivers were on the road last summer.

Excessive speed citations (16 mph or over the posted limit), ISC 49-654(2){EX}:

The incident was reported to ISP at about 9:00 a.m. and involved four vehicles and a building.

Investigating Troopers cited the driver of the lumber truck, Ronald J. Peeples, 42 of Meridian, with reckless driving, a misdemeanor.

Traffic Impact: No lanes were closed as a result of the incident, however, traffic was slow through the area for most of the morning as Troopers and emergency responders investigated and worked to clear the scene. The incident was cleared just before noon.
