News release - Idaho State Police partners with other law enforcement agencies to reduce impaired driving this holiday season.

Immediate release, November 26, 2019
Contact: Tecia Ferguson, ISP PIO, 208.884.7122 / tecia.ferguson@isp.idaho.gov
News release - Idaho State Police partners with other law enforcement agencies to reduce impaired driving this holiday season.

Starting today, the Idaho State Police and law enforcement agencies throughout Idaho, Washington, and Montana will increase patrols to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roadways. The extra patrols will continue through the holiday season.

During a multi-agency press conference Monday in Coeur d'Alene, Colonel Ked Wills of the Idaho State Police said safety on our roadways is a priority to all of the agencies involved.

"We're standing here united to help prevent the pain families suffer when they lose a loved one in a traffic crash. We want families to be together this holiday and many more to come," said Colonel Wills.

Impaired driving is always a focus for Idaho State Police Troopers. And for Troopers in North Idaho, the interest is particularly urgent.

- Between 2015 and 2017, nearly 60% of the fatal crashes in Kootenai County were caused by impaired drivers. According to NHTSA, in 2017, only 20% of the fatal crashes nationally were caused by impaired drivers.
- Since 2013, more than half of the fatal crashes in North Idaho have involved impaired drivers.
- North Idaho has the worst impaired driving rate in the state.

To address the problem, ISP and other law enforcement agencies have come together to form the North Idaho DUI Task Force. Their goal is to stop impaired driving crashes and fatalities in Northern Idaho.

Officer Nick Knoll of Coeur d'Alene Police Department, who coordinated Monday's press briefing, thanked the agencies involved with the task force and how both large and small agencies have committed to increase patrols from now through the holidays.

Colonel Wills also reinforced that the Idaho State Police and their partner law enforcement agencies are in the business of changing and saving lives, and the efforts of this task force is a key to do that.

"The holiday season should be a happy time. We are grateful for our law enforcement partners. We believe working together, our efforts will be more effective and make a difference." Said Colonel Wills.

Idaho State Police reminds the public that all of us have a stake in preventing impaired driving. What can you do?

- Designate a sober driver, call a cab, or use a ride-hailing service.
- Don't let friends get behind the wheel if they're under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- If you're hosting a party where guests may become impaired, make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.
- Always wear your seat belt - it's your best defense against impaired drivers.

During Monday's press briefing, a video was played, produced by the students at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum, Idaho. The video drives home the tragic impact impaired driving has on local families. Watch the video here.

Idaho State Police Graduates 16 new troopers, soon to be on the roads keeping motorists safe.

A ceremony today at the Idaho State Capitol celebrated 16 new ISP Troopers soon be serving communities across the state. The graduation culminates 18 weeks of training to prepare the new troopers to serve the Citizens of Idaho.

Governor Brad Little attended today's graduation thanking the families of the recruits, saying Idaho is a better place because of their presence.

"Law enforcement is one of the most important things that we can do in the State of Idaho to comfort and protect our citizens," he said.

Colonel Ked Wills said, trooper training is very intense at times, he shared some light hearted moments, like some of the 13 nick names earned by one of the new recruits during their 18 weeks of training. More seriously, the colonel reminded ISP's newest troopers of leadership and service they bring to Idaho.

"In their new career of service to the Citizens of Idaho, I am certain these new troopers will be valuable partners to both law enforcement and to the communities they serve. From Sandpoint to Pocatello, the ISP tradition of providing public safety service and professionalism is well represented," said Colonel Wills.

The colonel also thanked the families of the new troopers who supported them during their training for the past four months at the ISP Post Academy in Meridian.

State Senate Pro Tem Brent Hill, also spoke at today's ceremony, thanking the new troopers for choosing an honorable career in public safety. Senator Hill reminded the troopers of the positive influence they can have even on Idaho's youngest citizens. The Senator introduced his grade school age grandson who was attending the ceremony and wants to someday serve as a law enforcement K-9 officer.

Following with the tradition of statewide service, today's graduation took place in the rotunda of the Idaho statehouse. Also a tradition upon graduation, the new troopers were presented their badges and the campaign hat ISP Troopers are famous for and proud to wear.

These new troopers have been assigned to one of the six ISP Districts across the state and will soon start the next phase of their training in the field.

  • Traffic Incident Responder Week

It's Traffic Incident Responder Week in Idaho and Idaho State Police, along with law enforcement partners and highway workers throughout the state are conducting patrols to help drivers understand the importance of Idaho's "Move Over" law.

"The situation has become dangerous especially with more people driving distracted by carious causes," said Trooper Tyler, who participated in the focused patrols.

ISP Troopers and deputies from the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office made over 40 traffic stops during the campaign on Tuesday.  Trooper Tyler said some drivers admitted they simply didn't realize how dangerous it is for emergency and highway workers when drivers fail to move over as the law requires.

Governor Little announced this week as Traffic Incident Responder Week in Idaho. The goal is to encourage Idahoans to do their part to help responders stay safe as they work on emergencies and other incidents on Idaho's highways.

Every year hundreds of emergency workers are injured or killed while working on our roadways.

    • 150 U.S. law enforcement officers have been killed since 1999 after being struck along America's highways, according to the National Law Enforcement memorial Fund.
    • An average of six to eight fire rescue and EMS workers are killed working in or near moving traffic each year according to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute.
    • 191 motor vehicle towing workers were killed between 2011 and 2016, resulting in an annual rate of 42.0 deaths per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
    • The death rate is 2.9 per 100,000 FTE's for all other industries.
    • In Idaho, nine people were killed and over 200 injured in work zone related crashes in 2017.

As of July 1, 2019, Idaho expanded the "Move Over" law requiring drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles to include tow truck operators and highway incident response vehicles.
