On November 24, 2019 at 11:23 a.m. a fatal crash occurred in the 57000 block of Spirit Lake Cutoff Road, approximately six miles north of Spirit Lake, ID. A red 2016 Chevy Traverse SUV driven by John W. Hampton, 50, of Spirit Lake, ID was traveling northbound when he drove left of center while negotiating a curve and struck a red 2004 Ford truck, driven by Josiah N. Thompson, 44, of Spirit Lake, ID. Hampton's vehicle entered the northbound ditch and overturned. Thompson's vehicle came to rest in the road. John W. Hampton was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other occupants of the Traverse, Dawn M. Hampton, 39, of Spirit Lake, ID and a juvenile passenger were transported by ambulance to Kootenai Health. The fourth occupant, also a juvenile, was transported by Life-flight to Sacred Heart. Josiah Thompson sustained no injuries. All involved occupants were wearing seatbelts. The incident is still under investigation.
