Idaho State Police release 2017 Crime in Idaho report

The 2017 Crime in Idaho Report has been released on the new interactive Crime Dashboard. You can find the dashboard at https://nibrs.isp.idaho.gov/CrimeInIdaho

The 2017 publication was created on the newly implemented database with the upgraded system. It allows the public to look at the crime trends for a particular city, county or at the state level. Users will have the capability of running many canned reports and 'ad-hoc' queries of any data elements we collect on a single reported crime. It will allow the public, academia, law enforcement and criminal justice agencies timely report capabilities without having to submit a public records request. On this website the public can view the most current and archived "Crime in Idaho Publications." The current 2017 Crime in Idaho is available to view. It will have a new look and feel with more information than previous years.

When compiling the new publication, we updated the snapshot taken from the 2016 report. You may see some minor changes from the 2016 Crime in Idaho report released on July 1, 2017 to the 2016 numbers published in the current 2017 report. This is normal as crime information is updated from the agencies.

100 Deadliest Days of Driving comes to an end Labor Day Weekend – officers are looking for violators

Contact:
Tim Marsano, Idaho State Police PIO, 208.884.7122 or Bill Kotowski, Idaho Transportation Department PIO, 208.334.8869

Immediate release, Aug. 29, 2018

100 Deadliest Days is coming to an end this Labor Day Weekend - law enforcement is looking for violators
- First-ever statewide "No Refusal Weekend" in an effort to curb impaired driving -

With the high number of traffic fatalities this summer on Idaho's roadways since the "100 Deadliest Days of Summer" began Memorial Day weekend (93 deaths as of this message), law enforcement agencies around our state will be paying close attention to the behavior of drivers. In an effort to halt impaired driving, law enforcement officers will work overtime to strictly enforce our laws. Drivers suspected of intoxicated driving will be subject to having a search warrant issued for a blood draw if they attempt to refuse requests for a breath sample; prosecutors and judges are standing by to issue those warrants.

The Idaho Department of Transportation's Office of Highway Safety is coordinating this effort by providing overtime pay for officers who can participate. The primary goal is to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the roadway this holiday weekend through education and strict enforcement. This means a violator's chances of being caught, arrested and convicted are increased as a result of these efforts.

The Office of Highway Safety and Law Enforcement agencies across the state will be using social media (Facebook and Twitter) to keep Idahoans up to date on current DUI arrests in all areas of Idaho during this effort.

Law enforcement recommends these safe alternatives to drinking and driving:
- Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you've had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride sharing service to get home safely.

- Download NHTSA's SaferRide mobile app, available on Google Play for Android devices and Apple?s iTunes Store for iOS devices. SaferRide allows users to call a taxi or a predetermined friend, and identifies the user's location so he or she can be picked up.

- Use a rideshare program to get you home safe

- If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact law enforcement

- Have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.

"Drunk driving is not acceptable behavior," said Colonel Kedrick Wills, Idaho State Police director. "It is essential to plan a sober ride home before you ever leave for the party and every time we make that decision, we're saving lives. That's why, during the Labor Day holiday, we will make zero exceptions for drunk driving. There are just no excuses," he said.

News release - ISP urges motorists to pay extra attention in construction sites

This summer, Idaho law enforcement and emergency service agencies have responded to an extraordinarily high number of fatality crashes on our roadways. The "100 Deadliest Days" of driving began on Memorial Day weekend, and sadly, this summer may set a record.

Idaho State Police wants to remind and encourage motorists to pay attention to signs while driving, especially while in construction and detour areas. There are several large construction projects along I-84 and I-86 in southern Idaho. Many of the injury and fatality crashes we?ve seen have occurred there.

With that in mind, here are some tips for drivers:
- Many drivers now rely upon GPS devices to navigate to their destinations, but these devices can send you into dangerous situations as they are not always updated with road construction and temporary detours.
- Idaho State Police also wants to remind you that stopping on the interstate is extremely dangerous and should only be done in an emergency.
- It is important to know that use of a crossover to turn around is a misdemeanor criminal offense due to the great danger in which it puts you and other motorists.
- Do not enter or exit the interstate anywhere other than designated on- and off-ramps.
- Do not back up on the interstate and do not use the median to turn around. If you find yourself on a different route than what you wanted, drive to the next exit, find a safe place off the roadway to park (such as a parking lot), and figure out how to safely get back on the route. This may require you to drive 15 to 20 miles, but reaching your destination safely should be your top priority!
