Idaho State Police have arrested and charged a Spokane man with several felonies after he was found driving under the influence of drugs in a stolen car and led police on a high speed chase. During the chase, the man hit one ISP patrol car and two other vehicles. No one was injured during the incident. The arrest occurred after the suspect got out of the stolen vehicle holding a hatchet.

What Happened:
At 4:24 p.m. this afternoon, ISP Troopers responded to a citizen call of a grey Hyundai SUV on eastbound Interstate 90 driving erratically and trying to pass other vehicles between lanes. Troopers learned a vehicle matching that description had been reported stolen in Spokane. The vehicle was located by ISP and officers with Post Falls Police stopped at a red light near I-90 and Seltice Way. A Trooper pulled behind the suspect vehicle, and as the Trooper began giving commands, the driver accelerated, driving back onto I-90 at a high rate of speed.

As the Trooper pursued the suspect vehicle, the suspect hit his brakes causing the Trooper to swerve quickly to avoid a collision. The suspect then collided with the Trooper?s vehicle. The suspect led a pursuit in excess of 110mph on I-90 and later continued driving north on Highway 95. He continued to travel at a high rate of speed and collided with two other vehicles. Later, successful spike strips slowed his vehicle near Garwood Road. The collisions caused minor damage and no injuries.

At Garwood Road and Highway 95, the suspect stopped and as he got out of the vehicle, Troopers could see he was holding a hatchet. A Kootenai County deputy on scene deployed a Taser and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Investigating Troopers were able to identify the suspect as a fugitive from Washington State, and found evidence indicating he was under the influence of drugs during the incident. After being evaluated cleared by medical personnel on scene, Idaho State Police booked the suspect into the Kootenai County Jail.

Arrested: Jonathon D. Lewis, 33, Spokane
Charged: Driving Under the Influence (m)
Possession of Stolen Property (F)
Eluding (F)
Assault or Batter on an officer (F) 2 counts
Fugitive Warrant
Providing false information to officers (m)
Possession of drug paraphernalia (m)

Assisting Idaho State Police in locating and taking this suspect into custody were deputies with the Kootenai County Sheriff Office, and officers with Post Falls, Coeur d Alene, and Spokane Police.

Fatality Crash South Of Marsing
-------------------------------------------
Idaho State Police Troopers are investigating a head-on crash that occurred this afternoon on Highway 95 just south of Marsing. Tragically, the collision killed four people, all believed to be from California. Three others are hospitalized.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Investigating Troopers say evidence on scene indicates a Honda Civic traveling northbound collided with a GMC Sierra pickup traveling southbound. The incident was reported at 2:21 p.m. The speed limit on the highway in that area is 65 mph.

Four people were in the Honda Civic. All four are deceased. They are a male and three females ranging in age from 26 to 16. All are believed to be from Southern California.

Traveling in the GMC pickup were two males, a 21-year-old and a 16-year-old from Nampa, and a 20 year old female from Kuna. Two were taken by air ambulance, one by ground ambulance to nearby hospitals. At this time, it appears their injuries are non-life-threatening.

Following the collision, the pickup caught fire. Troopers say they spoke to a witness who stopped and helped the occupants of the pickup out of the vehicle. The fire eventually destroyed the GMC.

The on-scene investigation of the crash blocked or slowed traffic along the highway for approximately three hours.

Again, this incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police. Further information will be released as the investigation allows.

Law Enforcement Warns of Sharp Increase in Fentanyl-Related Fatal Overdoses in Kootenai County

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

IDAHO STATE POLICE NEWS RELEASE
District 1 Patrol 615 West Wilbur Ave. Coeur d'Alene, ID 83815
(208) 209-8620

For Immediate Release: 05/21/2021 10:45 AM
Please direct questions to the District Office or the ISP Public Affairs Office isppio@isp.idaho.gov

Today, law enforcement officials from Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S Attorney's Office, Idaho State Police, Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene Police Departments are warning the public about a sharp increase in fatal overdoses connected to the highly potent and often deadly drug, fentanyl.

Over the last eight days, five fatal overdoses have been reported in Kootenai County involving counterfeit prescription pills and other illicit narcotics suspected to be laced with fentanyl. These deaths involve four males and one female ranging in age from 15 to 60. It appears at this time all five deaths were accidental and unrelated.

While police are investigating the sources, they hope to halt the deadly trend by alerting the public and encouraging parents to talk to their teens about the dangers of these narcotics.

Anyone with information on who is supplying counterfeit prescription pills is urged to contact Idaho State Police at the Idaho Drug Tip Hotline 1-800-524-7277 or the Coeur d'Alene Police Department at 208-769-2320.

Nationally, overdose deaths continue to rise at alarming rates, with a noticeable increase during the pandemic. Nearly 90,000 people died as a result of drug overdose in the United States from November 1, 2019, through October 31, 2020, the largest number of drug-related deaths recorded within a single year, and more than 74 percent of those deaths involved an opioid. Overdose deaths involving a synthetic opioid rose 54.7 percent and appear to be the primary driver of the increase in total overdose deaths.

In Kootenai County last year, overdose deaths rose by 37 percent, from 24 in 2019 to 33 in 2020.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, and up to 50 times more potent than heroin. Even tiny doses, as little as two milligrams, the size of two grains of salt, is a fatal dose for most people. Mexican drug cartels are manufacturing mass quantities of fentanyl and counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl for distribution throughout North America.

Counterfeit prescription pills look exactly like legitimate prescription pills and are incredibly dangerous because the amount of fentanyl varies from each pill, even in the same batch. In other words, there is no way to tell whether a pill purchased illicitly on the internet or the street is actually Oxycodone or a more powerful drug.

Unless prescription drugs are obtained from an authorized medical provider or pharmacy, the public should not consume or even handle these pills. The synthetic opioids contained in them are often lethal if consumed even if in the smallest amounts, and may be lethal simply touching them. All Idahoans are urged to only use prescription drugs prescribed to them by legitimate health care providers and obtained from their pharmacy.

or your local District office.

Tomorrow begins the first weekend of "Click It or Ticket", an early travel season education and enforcement campaign aimed at saving lives by focusing on the simple, yet life-saving habit of wearing a seat belt.

Sadly, recent data shows more than half of Idaho motorists killed in crashes were not buckled in.*

"Seatbelts save lives. That's something we see every day," said Trooper Tauna Davis of ISP District 2 in Lewiston. "Unfortunately fatalities can occur anytime, anyplace, at any speed. No one thinks it could happen to them, until it does."

"I've witnessed, firsthand, the damage and tragedy caused by not wearing a seat belt. Seat belts secure drivers in their seats, ensuring they have total control of their vehicle. With more drivers on the roads as the weather gets warmer, we want you to help us keep your family whole. Buckle up and drive well Idaho."

Idaho law requires everyone in a vehicle to wear safety restraints. The law also states that any adult driver can also be ticketed for passengers younger than 18 who are not properly restrained.

"We'd like to see every motorist buckled up for every trip," said Trooper Scott Bolen from ISP District 4 in Jerome. "But often what we see are injuries that change lives and devastate families that just may have been prevented by taking a second to snap a seat belt. That's why the law is in place and that's why we enforce and educate people about seat belts. It's about keeping Idaho families whole."

Partnerships help Protect Motorists: ISP is proud to be among 59 agencies throughout Idaho supporting the current "Click It or Ticket" campaign. Trooper Davis and Trooper Bolen represent ISP as law enforcement liaisons (LEL's) to the ITD Office of Highway Safety, helping build partnerships and create mobilizations with the goal of protecting motorists traveling on Idaho's roadways.

For more on Idaho's education campaign to remind motorists to buckle up, go to http://shift-idaho.org/buckleupidaho/.

------------------------------------------------

Additional patrols are funded by a grant from the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Thank you to these agencies for supporting ISP's efforts to keep Idaho's roadways safe.

*ITD Office of Highway Safety data shows from 2015-2019, 56% of vehicle occupants killed in Idaho were not restrained, and 1,207 unrestrained vehicle occupants were critically injured in traffic crashes.

Here's what is known at this time:
At approximately 10:51 p.m., the Idaho State Police received the call of a vehicle fire on the westbound shoulder of I-90. Upon arrival, Troopers observed a fully engulfed passenger car burning on the westbound roadside with the fire spread into the trees in the area. Further investigation this morning has led to the vehicle being identified as a gray 2018 Subaru Cross Trek, a compact SUV.

Idaho State Police Troopers were dispatched to a reported road rage incident this morning that resulted in shots being fired on northbound Interstate 15 near Pocatello. A Utah man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

What Happened: At 8:09 a.m., Idaho State Police Troopers were dispatched to the area of I-15 near milepost 67 in Pocatello for a report of shots being fired from a white pickup. According to a witness, the driver of white GMC Sierra pickup traveling on Interstate 15 northbound came up quickly behind a Toyota Matrix sedan being driven by a Pocatello man. According to reports, when the pickup driver came upon the slower vehicle, he fired approximately nine rounds from the pickup toward the driver of the Toyota. One round struck the victim's vehicle, breaking the driver's window and going through the ballcap the driver was wearing. The victim suffered minor injuries from the breaking glass of his window, but was otherwise unhurt. He called 911 to report the incident.

The suspect continued driving north on I-15 where witnesses say he came quickly upon the driver of another pickup and reportedly displayed a firearm at that driver, also a man from Pocatello. That driver was able to follow the suspect's vehicle, call 911, and report to dispatchers the suspect's location.

The suspect was located in his vehicle near the Fort Hall Casino. His vehicle was found with bullet holes through the windshield. The suspect was found in possession of a rifle and two handguns. He was taken into custody without incident. This incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police. Additional charges are possible.

Arrested: Christian Heskett, 22, West Jordan, UT
Charged: Aggravated Battery by use of a deadly weapon (F)

The suspect was booked into the Bannock County Jail on the above charges. Again, the investigation is ongoing.
Fort Hall Police were instrumental in taking the suspect into custody.

Update: The woman critically injured in last Tuesday's nine-car crash on Interstate 84 has died.
Additional information on the deceased will be released by the Ada County Coroner's Office.
This incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.

###

----------previously released----------

May 11, 2021 - Idaho State Police Troopers are investigating a crash that involved nine vehicles and blocked or delayed traffic on Interstate 84 for much of the day today in Boise.

At this time, one Boise woman remains hospitalized with what are reported to be life-threatening injuries. Three others were transported to nearby hospitals with reportedly minor injuries. The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

What Happened: Idaho State Police Troopers were dispatched to a report of a multi-vehicle crash including a semi on fire on Interstate 84 near the Cloverdale overpass this morning at 7:34 a.m.

When Troopers arrived, they found a semi hauling 65,000 pounds of lumber on fire in the median, with debris and wreckage from the crash blocking nearly all eight lanes of travel in both east and westbound lanes.

At this time, it appears the incident began in the eastbound lanes when the driver of a red Toyota Tacoma pickup, a 28-year-old man from Parma, made a sudden lane change, hitting the semi loaded with lumber. That semi sideswiped an eastbound passenger vehicle before crashing through the concrete median, catching fire, and hitting a westbound semi that jack-knifed.

Investigators believe flying debris from one of the semis hit the roof of a westbound Toyota Camry. The impact appears to have knocked the driver unconscious, but her vehicle continued forward. The Camry was located .45 miles past the initial crash scene still in a westbound lane. The driver, a 27-year-old woman from Boise, was taken to the hospital with what are reportedly life-threatening injuries.

Three others were transported to nearby hospitals with what are reported to be minor injuries; the driver of the red Toyota Tacoma, a 28-year-old man from Boise who was the driver of the semi hauling lumber, and a 40-year-old man from Nampa who was driving an eastbound white Toyota Tacoma pickup.

In all, the chain reaction from the initial impact involved six eastbound vehicles and three westbound vehicles including a semi in each direction.

Traffic Impact: Clearing vehicles from the scene remains ongoing. At this time (4:05 pm), two lanes of travel remain blocked in each direction. All but one lane of travel each way was blocked for most of the morning and all eastbound lanes were blocked for more than an hour before crews were able to open two lanes in each direction shortly after noon. The blockage caused traffic back-ups for miles both east and westbound. Delays continue at this hour while road crews work clear debris and repair the roadway.

Multi-Agency Response: Idaho State Police would like to thank the other emergency response agencies who immediately came to the scene to assist those involved and aid in the investigation and scene management. Troopers' gratitude goes out to Boise and Meridian Police, the Ada County Sheriff's Department, Ada County EMS, Boise and Meridian Fire, the Idaho Transportation Department, and responding tow companies.

This incident remains under active investigation by the Idaho State Police.
