Idaho State Police Celebrates 85 Years of Service

MERIDIAN, Idaho - The Idaho State Police (ISP) proudly announces its 85th birthday celebration, commemorating nearly a century of dedicated service to the state of Idaho. Even before becoming the Idaho Territory in 1863 or the 43rd state in 1890, Idaho's history lies with our native tribes, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and determined pioneers on the Oregon Trail. These same qualities of resilience and courage exemplify the men and women of ISP.

Colonel Kedrick Wills, Director of ISP, reflects on the organization's remarkable journey, "As we celebrate this significant milestone, we honor the legacy of those who have served before us and recognize the dedication of the incredible men and women who continue to serve. From The Bureau of Constabulary in 1919, the creation of ISP in 1939, through our 85th birthday, ISP's dedication to the people of Idaho remains the same - Serve and protect the lives, property, and constitutional rights of people in Idaho."

Since its inception, the members of ISP have worked in local communities to aid motorists, educate and enforce traffic safety, investigate crimes, regulate commerce, and support local law enforcement.

"Over 700 talented professionals serve with distinction, and I am confident that they are some of the best Idaho offers," Colonel Wills added. "ISP stands on the successes of giants who came before us, and we continually strive for excellence and to leave a legacy for those who follow."

The 85th birthday celebration will occur at the Idaho State Capitol on February 20th from noon to 3 p.m. The event will be held on the second-floor Rotunda and feature a proclamation ceremony at 1 p.m. to honor and recognize the efforts of the ISP personnel in serving the people of Idaho.

"We invite the public and members of our 67th legislative body to join us in commemorating this milestone event," Colonel Wills concluded. "It's an opportunity to reflect on our achievements, express gratitude to those who have contributed to our successes and look ahead to the future as we continue to be a vital resource for Idaho."

Traffic Stop Leads to Discovery of Illicit Drugs near Pocatello

POCATELLO, Idaho - In the early hours of February 8th, Domestic Highway Enforcement Team (DHE) troopers initiated a traffic stop on a 2013 Chrysler 300 for an equipment violation near Pocatello. During the stop, the occupants raised suspicion of criminal activity, and a trained drug detection canine was deployed, which alerted troopers to the odor of illegal drugs coming from inside the vehicle. As a result, a probable cause search revealed the discovery and seizure of approximately 5.5 pounds of methamphetamine and 3,000 fentanyl pills hidden inside a spare tire.

"This seizure underscores the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat illegal drugs in our communities," stated DHE Sergeant Curt Sproat. "The dangers associated with these illicit substances cannot be overstated as they pose a grave threat to public health and safety in our communities. We are committed to removing them from our streets."

The occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody pending further investigation.

ISP continues to prioritize the safety and security of the people of Idaho. We remain dedicated to Governor Little's Esto Perpetua and combatting the illegal drug trade to remove illicit activity from our streets.

"We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Together, we can work towards a safer, drug-free environment for all," said Sproat.

The DHE Team is a multi-jurisdictional narcotics task force that identifies, disrupts, and dismantles local, multi-state, and international drug trafficking organizations using an intelligence-driven, multi-agency, prosecutor-supported approach. The Team is supported by the Oregon-Idaho High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program, also composed of members from the Idaho State Police, which is an Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) sponsored counterdrug grant program that coordinates with and provides funding resources to multi-agency drug enforcement initiatives.

Unveiling the Power of Compassion: SANE Nurses Transform Lives in Idaho

MERIDIAN, Idaho - Sexual assault and its aftermath are traumatic experiences, but proper support can make all the difference. Three years ago, Idaho grappled with limited resources, especially in rural communities, as there were only three sites with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs). SANEs are specially trained registered nurses qualified to conduct crucial sexual assault forensic exams for survivors. While other sites had willing nurses, the lack of specialized training stopped them from providing the comprehensive care survivors needed. Despite their difficult situation, many hospitals turned away survivors, transferring them to alternate facilities or asking them to travel to another site that was sometimes hours away where they could get needed services.

Turning Tides: A Commitment to Change
In a groundbreaking move, the Idaho State Police (ISP) took a stand to address this critical gap in support. In 2018, ISP hired a Registered Nurse (RN) as the Idaho SANE/SART Coordinator, beginning a transformative journey. Recognizing the urgent need, a second Coordinator joined the team in 2023, amplifying the reach across Idaho.

From City to Counties: Bridging Gaps in Rural Communities
The Idaho SANE/SART Coordinators are dedicated to enhancing access to comprehensive care for individuals who face sexual assault in Idaho. They provide specialized training on medical forensic exams and essential emotional support to a wide range of medical professionals, including nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and professionals from intersecting disciplines involved in patient care. Presently, 32 sites across the state are equipped with skilled Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), ensuring crucial services are available to survivors and their families in cities and towns throughout Idaho.

Empowering Justice, One Nurse at a Time
Unfortunately, the demand for forensic nurses continues to grow. Currently, only one organization provides 24/7 forensic nursing, posing challenges for survivors and their families in a devastating situation. The role of a SANE nurse demands empathy and compassion, making it a calling for those with a heart to care for the most vulnerable.

Join the Ranks: Become an Idaho SANE
If you or someone you know wants to make a difference in the lives of survivors and communities, we urge you to become a SANE. ISP offers career and life-changing classes to RNs at no cost. Together, we can support survivors in their journey toward healing. Your journey as an Idaho SANE begins here.

2024 Classes:
- February 5-9 in Boise
- March 18-22 in Lewiston
- April 8-12 in Twin Falls
- May 6-10 in Rupert
- June 10-14 in Orofino
- July 15-19 in Bonners Ferry
- September 9-13 in Preston
- October 7-11 in Moscow

*Classes can be scheduled for your organization!

ISP continues investigating the fatal crash that occurred yesterday afternoon on 600 N between Reid Road and 1100 E (Mountain View Rd), south of Goshen.

At this point, investigating troopers believe the patrol vehicle, driven by a 38-year-old female deputy with the Bingham County Sheriff's Office, was traveling westbound on 600 North when it drifted across the middle of the road and entered the eastbound lane of travel and collided with the eastbound 2002 Dodge Ram 2500. Following the collision, both vehicles came to a stop off the roadway. All occupants were trapped in their vehicles until extricated by medical/rescue personnel.

The driver of the Ram, an 80-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and the passenger, a 76-year-old female, was transported by ground ambulance for serious injuries. Both occupants were from Shelley.

The deputy, who has approximately nine years of patrol experience, was transported by ground ambulance with critical injuries.
