Guy Isaac, 57, of Nampa, was eastbound on I-84 at milepost 28 in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado. Part of the cargo in the back of the pickup fell out, landing in both lanes of travel. Heather Lott, 36, of Caldwell, was eastbound on I-84 in a 2010 Ford Edge in the left lane of travel. Lott saw the traffic in front of her braking, and steered into the right lane to avoid a collision. Traffic was slowing in the right lane as well, so Lott steered onto the right shoulder, where the Ford struck Isaac. Isaac came to rest on the I-84 onramp; the Ford came to rest on the right shoulder of I-84.

Isaac succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. Lott was wearing her seatbelt. Next of kin has been notified. The right lane of I-84 and the I-84 onramp were blocked for approximately two-and-a-half hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

Treasure Valley Law Enforcement Unite to Stop Impaired Driving This Holiday Season

IDAHO STATE POLICE NEWS RELEASE
Teresa Baker
Public Information Officer
Headquarters
700 S. Stratford Dr., Meridian 83642
(208) 884-7122
Fax (208) 884-7087

For Immediate Release: 12/17/15 at 6:05 p.m.

MERIDIAN - Law enforcement officers from across the Treasure Valley are teaming up to stop impaired driving this holiday season. The Boise, Caldwell and Nampa Police Departments and the Idaho State Police, as part of the Treasure Valley DUI Task Force, are joining together to enforce impaired driving laws through the holiday season. Just as important as enforcement action is raising the public's awareness of the dangers of driving after drinking too much, using illegal substances or even taking over the counter or prescription medication.

"Whether you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, prescription or illicit, the message is the same, don't get behind the wheel," said Idaho State Police Cpl. Kenny Walker. "The holidays are a time to bring family and friends together in celebration and, unfortunately, we see all too often families destroyed by a car crash when the driver should not have been driving."

In 2014, there were 1,378 impaired driving crashes in Idaho. Out of those incidents, 72 people lost their lives and 227 were seriously injured. Almost 39% of all fatalities on Idaho's roads and highways were the result of impaired driving.

Additional funding for impaired driving emphasis patrols by law enforcement between December 18th and January 6th is provided by the Idaho Department of Transportation's Office of Highway Safety.

In cooperation with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the officers and troopers who will be on patrol in the Treasure Valley on Saturday night will hear from a survivor of an impaired driving crash during the kick-off of the night.

You can easily avoid a becoming a DUI statistic but you must PLAN AHEAD.

- PLAN not drink and drive before you start drinking. Alcohol impairs a person's ability to determine if they should drive. You can't count on making the right decision after you've consumed alcohol!
- Designate a sober driver and give that person your keys.
- Plan to call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
- Offer non-alcoholic beverages when entertaining.
- Promptly report drunk drivers to 9-1-1 or *ISP (*477) on your mobile phone.
- Wear your seat belt. This is the best defense against an impaired driver.
- Friends don't let friends drive drunk or impaired. If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their car keys and make other safe travel arrangements to get them home, or offer a spare bedroom or sofa to "sleep it off."

Palmer Alaska Man Sentenced for Ponderay Credit Union Robbery

COEUR D'ALENE - Karl Erik Erickson, 33, of Palmer, Alaska, was sentenced today in United States District Court to 48 months in prison followed by three years supervised release for his robbery of a Ponderay credit union, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced. U.S. District Judge Stanley Bastian, a visiting judge from the Eastern District of Washington assigned to hear some Idaho cases, also ordered Erickson to pay $3,410 in restitution. Erickson pleaded guilty to the charge on September 15, 2015.

According to court documents, Erickson admitted that in July 2015, he went into the Horizon Credit Union in Ponderay, Idaho, and told the teller it was a robbery. Post Falls Man Pleads Guilty to Murder for Hire and Drug Charges

COEUR D'ALENE - Darin Kyle Taylor, 55, of Post Falls, Idaho, pleaded guilty today in two related cases to use of interstate facilities in the commission of murder for hire, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced. On August 18, 2015, Taylor was indicted for the federal drug charge. On December 4, 2015, Taylor waived his right to be indicted grand jury and agreed to be charged with murder for hire in federal court.

According to the plea agreements, on June 17 and June 30, 2015, the Idaho State Police worked with a confidential informant to purchase methamphetamine from Taylor at his Post Falls, residence. On July 1, 2015, Idaho State Police detectives served a search warrant at Taylor’s residence and seized methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, cash, and firearms.

On August 19, 2015, the day after Taylor was indicted by a federal grand jury on drug charges, Taylor met with a confidential informant working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Taylor solicited this ATF confidential informant to murder another person promising to pay cash. Taylor was arrested on the federal drug charge shortly after his conversation and has been in federal custody since.

The murder for hire charge is punishable by up to ten years in prison, supervised release up to three years, and a maximum fine of $250,000. The methamphetamine charge is punishable by not less than five years and no more than forty years in prison, supervised release of not less than four years, and a maximum fine of $5,000,000.

Sentencing is set for March 1, 2016, before Senior U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge at the federal courthouse in Coeur d'Alene.

The cases were investigated by the Idaho State Police, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

On Friday, December 04, 2015, at 1:35 p.m., the Idaho State investigated a commercial vehicle property damage crash on Interstate 84 at mile 26, the Notus exit.

Stephen Dick, 61 years old of Eagle, was driving eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 26 in the far left lane when he had a tire failure and crashed into the concrete median barrier. The barrier dislodged and went into the westbound lanes of travel, completely blocking the interstate. The 1998 Western Semi, hauling a 50,000 pound piece of construction equipment, slid down the concrete barrier for several 100 feet. The equipment became lodged on the median barrier and the tractor ruptured its fuel tank where a significant amount of fuel was spilled. Dick was wearing a seatbelt and no citation was issued.

The Idaho Department of Transportation is involved in repairing the damaged barrier, cleaning up the fuel spill, and traffic control. A private contractor was also brought in to clean the spill as well.

Both the eastbound and the westbound lanes were blocked for a considerable amount of time. The westbound lanes were opened at 5:30 p.m. The eastbound lanes reopened at 6:15 p.m.

This crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.

Idaho State Police to Host MADD's First-Ever National Day of Remembrance Tomorrow

Idaho State Police will host activities for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers First-Ever National Day of Remembrance on December 3rd in conjunction with events across the country honoring victims and survivors of drunk driving, drugged driving and underage drinking consequences.

Victims and Survivors of impaired driving in Idaho have come together during the month of November to make and purchase blankets in honor of loved ones who are victims and survivors of impaired driving crashes. Over 300 blankets were donated- each tied with ribbon and the name of a Victim/Survivor. A blanket made in honor of a Victim/Survivor will be placed in ISP patrol cars—for future victims in need.

A blanket presentation and a time to honor and remember all victims of driving will take place at the Idaho State Police District 3 Office on December 3, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the event is to remind victims and survivors across the state that their losses, pain and suffering are not forgotten, and they are not alone- they always have a place in our hearts and in the hearts and minds of law enforcement who work so diligently to keep impaired drivers off the road and prosecutors who keep those who will not follow the law behind bars—both keeping the roads safer for all of us.

December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and the deadliest month of the year for drunk driving crashes. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s in 2013, 846 people were killed in drunk driving crashes nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). New Year’s Day is the deadliest single day of the year for drunk driving – with 44 drunk driving fatalities on that day in 2013 alone. A total of 161 people were killed by drunk driving crashes during the New Year’s holiday in 2013 (New Year’s Eve and Day).

Leading up to the event, drunk and drugged driving victims and MADD supporters are invited to post an image of their loved ones using the hashtag “#MADDremembers” via their social media accounts or on the MADD Facebook page or visit madd.org/placesetting to dedicate an online place setting tribute in their honor.

In 2014, MADD Victim Services provided a supportive service every four minutes and served a victim every 15 minutes. Drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors can find help free of charge through local MADD Victim Advocates, MADD’s 24-hour Victim Help Line 1-877-MADD-HELP, or with the live chat feature on madd.org. MADD Victim Services include emotional support, court accompaniment, criminal justice advocacy, educational materials, community referrals, and prevention efforts such as child endangerment and concerned citizen calls.
