"100 Deadliest Days of Driving" and "Toward Zero Deaths" event, Friday June 2 from 3-5 p.m., Idaho State Police HQ in Meridian
Idaho has now entered the "100 Deadliest Days of Driving," the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year. In 2016, 85 people died on Idaho's roadways during that timeframe and hundreds more were injured. Local and State law enforcement agencies are teaming up to educate Idahoans on the best ways to arrive alive at your destination.
Idaho law enforcement agencies want to remind drivers of the simple things that can save your life and the lives of your loved ones. In coordination with the Idaho Transportation Department, we are working toward zero traffic deaths.
- Buckle up - it's the best defense if you're in a crash
- Slow down, be patient. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you're going.
- Drive sober! Impaired driving is a leading cause of crashes and resulting injuries and deaths on our roadways. Law enforcement will be watching closely this summer for signs of impaired driving.
- Just drive. Put down your phone and other distractions such as food.
- Give yourself some distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Use the three-second rule.
- Promptly report suspected impaired drivers and other hazardous drivers to law enforcement. On your mobile phone, dial *ISP (*477) or just dial 9-1-1.
'
Media representatives will have the opportunity to come to ISP Headquarters in Meridian to observe simulated impaired drivers and other demonstrations on our drivers' training track.
When: Friday, June 2, 2017 at 3 p.m.
Where: ISP Headquarters, 700 S. Stratford Dr., Meridian, Idaho. Meet PIO Tim Marsano outside, in front of the main ISP Headquarters Building; I will take you to the event.
What: Reporters will see demonstrations of
- Distracted driving
- Driving through slalom course while (simulated) impaired
- A competition between members of the public and law enforcement - who can get into their vehicles and click into their seatbelts faster?
- Display of Office of Highway Safety-sponsored race car with Toward Zero Highway Deaths logo
- Pledge of participants not to drive distracted or impaired
Who: We anticipate having representatives of many Idaho law enforcement agencies from the Treasure Valley area, as well as a number of youths to participate in the demonstrations.
Agencies planning on participating include:
- Boise Police Dept.
- Idaho State Police
- Idaho Transportation Dept.
- Mountain Home Police Dept.
- Elmore County Sheriff's Office
- Canyon County Sheriff's Office
- Nampa Police Dept.
- Meridian Police Dept.
- Ada County Sheriff's Office
- Middleton Police Dept.
- Garden City Police Dept.

Idaho is about to enter the annual "100 Deadliest Days of Driving," the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year. In 2016, 85 people died on Idaho's roadways during that timeframe. Local and State law enforcement agencies are teaming up to educate Idahoans on the best ways to arrive alive at your destination. During the 100 Deadliest Days, Idaho State Police will team up with local law enforcement agencies and deploy across the region to aggressively apprehend impaired drivers. Troopers and officers will be looking for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and other substances - as well as aggressive drivers - to enhance public safety.

Idaho law enforcement agencies want to remind drivers of the simple things that can save your life and the lives of your loved ones. In coordination with the Idaho Transportation Department, we are working toward zero impaired deaths.
- Buckle up - it's the best defense if you're in a crash
- Slow down, be patient. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you're going.
- Drive sober! Impaired driving is a leading cause of accidents and resulting injuries and deaths on our roadways.

Media advisory: Idaho State Police District 3 invites media representatives to join ISP Troopers and police officers from across the Treasure Valley for a briefing where Troopers will discuss impaired driving and the campaign to reel it in beginning this Memorial Day Weekend. Note: this event is primarily intended for law enforcement officers to meet and coordinate with one another prior to the holiday weekend.

Reporters may come to the ISP District 3 building (the smaller building as you enter the parking lot), 700 S. Stratford Dr., Meridian at 7:00 p.m. TODAY, May 26, 2017. You?ll be met and escorted to the briefing room.

Public Information Officer, Idaho State Police

tim.marsano@isp.idaho.gov

Memorial Day marks the beginning of long days filled with sunshine, barbeques and activities with family and friends, however for far too many it also means that loved ones are lost in motor vehicle crashes. Memorial Day through Labor Day is known as the "100 Deadliest Days" on Idaho's roads and historically it is the time of year when there are more deaths and serious injuries due to dangerous driving behaviors.

Law enforcement in Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce (Idaho), Asotin and Whitman (Washington) counties along with the Idaho State Police and Washington State Patrol are partnering to stop impaired driving, one of the most deadly and preventable causes of crashes with a regional impaired driving emphasis over Memorial Weekend. In addition to impaired drivers, law enforcement will be aggressively enforcing all hazardous driving behaviors such as distracted driving, aggressive driving and occupants not wearing seat belts.

The agencies participating in the regional impaired driving emphasis include the following:

Asotin County Sheriff's Office
Asotin Police Department
Clarkston Police Department
Clearwater County Sheriff's Office
Grangeville Police Department
Idaho County Sheriff's Office
Idaho State Police
Kamiah Marshall's Office
Latah County Sheriff's Office
Lewis County Sheriff's Office
Lewiston Police Department
Moscow Police Department
Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office
Nez Perce Tribal Police Department
Orofino Police Department
Pullman Police Department
Washington State Patrol
Whitman County Sheriff's Office

Law enforcement will continue to work as one team throughout the summer with the goal of reducing deadly crashes caused by dangerous driving behaviors including impaired drivers, distracted drivers, aggressive drivers, speed, as well as, seatbelt enforcement. The Idaho Department of Transportation's Office of Highway Safety is providing grant funds that will allow law enforcement agencies to pay for extra patrols dedicated to traffic law enforcement.

You can easily avoid becoming a DUI statistic but you must PLAN AHEAD.

- PLAN not drink and drive before you start drinking. Alcohol impairs a person's ability to determine if they should drive. You can't count on making the right decision after you've consumed alcohol!

- Designate a sober driver and give that person your keys.

- Plan to call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.

- Offer non-alcoholic beverages when entertaining.

- Promptly report drunk drivers to 9-1-1 or *ISP (*477) on your mobile phone.

- Wear your seat belt. This is the best defense against an impaired driver.

- Friends don't let friends drive drunk or impaired. If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their car keys and make other safe travel arrangements to get them home, or offer a spare bedroom or sofa to "sleep it off."
