Idaho State Police Honors Unsung Heroes During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

MERIDIAN, Idaho - Idaho State Police (ISP) is proud to recognize the second week of April as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, paying tribute to the invaluable contributions of our Regional Communications Officers (RCOs) stationed across the state.

Observed from April 14th to 20th, National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week serves as a poignant reminder of the crucial role telecommunicators play in ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. These unsung heroes are the first point of contact in times of crisis, serving as the vital link between those in distress and emergency response teams.

Captain Jens Pattis, overseeing ISP's Communications Centers, underscores the significance of RCOs in public safety, stating, "All of our Regional Communications Officers, stationed in our two Regional Communications Centers, are the 'first-first responders' of this agency. Handling over 200,000 calls for service each year, they navigate the most stressful situations with unparalleled expertise. Their swift action in gathering crucial information, dispatching emergency resources, and providing life-saving instructions is commendable and truly invaluable to communities throughout Idaho."

Despite often working behind the scenes, telecommunicators' impact is profound. ISP acknowledges their dedication and unwavering commitment to public service. Despite the challenges they face, RCOs remain steadfast in their duty to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

"While telecommunicators may not always receive the recognition they deserve, ISP is committed to honoring their service," stated Captain Pattis. "During National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week, we express our deepest gratitude and thank our RCOs for their consistent and unwavering dedication."

In celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, ISP reaffirms its commitment to supporting and recognizing the invaluable contributions of its telecommunicators in safeguarding communities across the state.

Building Connected Communities: Expanding Access to Sexual Support Services Throughout Idaho

MERIDIAN, Idaho - In alignment with "Building Connected Communities," the Idaho State Police (ISP) proudly announces its ongoing commitment to enhancing access to crucial support services for survivors of sexual assault throughout Idaho - especially in rural communities. As April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, ISP reaffirms its dedication to increasing public awareness and support for survivors across the state.

Recognizing the profound impact of sexual assault on individuals and communities, ISP underscores the importance of accessible and specialized care for survivors. Despite the challenging nature of this issue, ISP encourages survivors to seek immediate support by calling 911 and accessing care from a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) at local hospitals.

"Sexual assault is a pervasive issue that demands our collective attention and action. Survivors must receive the care and support they deserve, regardless of their location," says Deb Wetherelt, Idaho SANE Coordinator with ISP. "Through our ongoing efforts, we aim to bridge the service gap to give survivors in rural communities access to specialized care and resources."

In addition to training initiatives, ISP actively promotes and trains SANE nurses for certification by providing study resources as their expertise and dedication serve survivors and bolster the capacity of rural communities to provide specialized care for survivors.

Further, ISP is proud to announce the rebranding of the ten-year-old Idaho Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (ISAKI) working group as the Idaho Sexual Assault Response Team (ISART). ISAKI was initially created to address previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits in Idaho but quickly expanded to address additional sexual assault response issues in Idaho. This group of state experts in the field of sexual assault prevention and response has helped draft legislation, developed policy and procedure, and guided statewide efforts that enhance law enforcement, medical, and support services for survivors. The new name for the group adds emphasis to the state's collaborative team efforts in support of local Idaho communities addressing sexual assault response. The resources ISART continues to develop include:

-Nurse education and training
-Sexual assault evidence collection facilities in rural communities
-"Soft" law enforcement interview rooms for survivors
-Law enforcement training and continuing education
-Establishment and support of local SARTs who will work in local communities throughout Idaho
-Research into sexual assault response in Idaho and publication of that research to inform policymakers

ISART continues under leadership provided by Idaho State Police Forensic Services.

Idaho State Police Increase Efforts to Combat Distracted Driving in April

Idaho State Police Increase Efforts to Combat Distracted Driving in April

BOISE, Idaho - In observance of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Idaho State Police (ISP), in collaboration with the Idaho Office of Highway Safety (OHS) and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), is intensifying its efforts to combat distracted driving across the state. The initiative, focusing on education and enforcement, aims to remind drivers that Idaho is a hands-free state, emphasizing the importance of engaged driving.

Distracted driving presents itself in various forms: adjusting the radio or GPS, applying makeup, and eating and drinking while behind the wheel. However, cell phone use - specifically, texting, talking, and social media engagement - emerges as the most prevalent and dangerous distraction on our roads. Texting, encompassing messaging activities, is deemed the most dangerous type of distracted driving due to its combination of visual, manual, and cognitive distractions.

"Distracted driving poses a threat to every road user. Any distraction, whether adjusting the radio, applying makeup, or texting, can lead to tragic consequences," says Lieutenant Colonel Sheldon Kelley. "Let's commit to driving responsibly and remind our friends and family to do the same. The focus should be solely on the road ahead when you're behind the wheel."

During 2022 in Idaho, there were over 4,750 distracted driving crashes with 34 fatalities. National Distracted Driving Awareness Month reminds drivers to reassess their behaviors behind the wheel and take responsibility for their actions.

Stay safe and engaged while driving:
-If you're texting, pull over.
-Use a "Designated Texter" so the driver can focus on the road.
-Avoid "App-Surfing" and scrolling on the phone while driving.

Throughout Distracted Driving Awareness Month, but specifically between April 4 and 8, expect increased statewide law enforcement on the roadways as part of the national campaign to remind drivers of the deadly dangers and the legal consequences of distracted driving.

Together, we can make Idaho's roads safer for everyone.
