Barricaded suspect in Valley County

Early this morning, officers from the Valley County Sheriff’s office responded to the Alpine Lodge to contact a male suspect at the motel believed to be a fugitive from Washington State. The suspect, Sean Duggan,  briefly opened the door and displayed a weapon. Concerned for the safety of people nearby, the sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter and evacuated people near the motel.

At approximately 1:10 am, the Valley County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Idaho State Police Swat Team for assistance with a barricaded subject at the Alpine Lodge in Cascade.

When the ISP Swat Team arrived on the scene, the suspect was still inside the motel with a weapon and holding a female hostage.   The ISP Swat team negotiated with the suspect for several hours in an attempt to resolve the incident.  After several hours, the female was released.

ISP continued negotiating with the suspect by phone.  ISP Swat Team members used a gas irritant in an attempt to get the suspect to leave the room.  When the suspect did not come out, ISP Swat Officers opened the door into the motel room to continue the negotiation process.  ISP Swat Officers heard several shots being fired by the subject.  No ISP Swat Officers returned fire at the subject.  After a period of time, the ISP Swat Team entered into the room and located Mr. Duggan who was deceased from self-inflicted injuries.

The next of kin has been notified.  The investigation is ongoing.  We will release additional information if it becomes available.

Pursuit ends in Jerome County

At approximately 11:05 am, Ada County Deputies initiated a traffic stop in Ada County on I-84.  The suspect fled from the traffic stop and Ada County Deputies discontinued the pursuit at that time.  Upon investigation, it was determined that the driver was the suspect of possibly two kidnappings, was considered armed and dangerous, and had a felony warrant for his arrest.

At about 11:34 am, Elmore County Deputies, along with Idaho State Police and Gooding County Sheriff’s Deputies located the vehicle and continued the pursuit of the suspect. The pursuit resulted in the suspect traveling at high speeds, including driving the wrong direction on the interstate between Bliss and Wendell. Gooding County deputies and ISP continued the pursuit which ended north of Wendell, where the suspect’s vehicle became disabled.  The suspect then stole a pickup truck at gunpoint and continued to flee from Law Enforcement. Shots were fired at the suspect and the pursuit ended at a dairy near Wendell, in Gooding County.  When officers arrived on the scene the suspect was incapacitated.  Lifesaving measures were taken, however, the suspect died at the scene.   The Critical Incident Task Force (CITF), comprised of all major law enforcement agencies in the Magic Valley, was activated.  The Twin Falls Police Department is the lead agency in this investigation.  No officers, or members of the public, were injured during this event.

This is an ongoing investigation. Further information will be released by the TFPD, at the appropriate time. If anyone has any information regarding this incident or was a witness, please call the TFPD at 208-735-7200

On Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 at approximately 10:09 p.m., Idaho State Police received a call from the Clark County Sheriff's Office advising their deputy was in pursuit of 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup southbound on Interstate 15 near milepost 179, approximately 12 miles north of Dubois. The vehicle had initially been reported to 911 dispatchers by multiple citizens as swerving all over the road. A Clark County Sheriff's deputy located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to pull over.

Idaho State Police Troopers responded to the area and deployed hollow spike strips at multiple locations on I-15. The suspect's vehicle ran over the spikes, flattening 3 tires on his Silverado pickup. The suspect, later identified as Brian Bensen, of Lewiston, ID, continued to drive on the rims at slow speeds for over 20 miles. Bensen came to a stop near milepost 124 on I-15, about 5 miles north of Idaho Falls.

Troopers and Deputies from Clark, Jefferson and Bonneville counties were in a standoff with Bensen, as he refused to exit his vehicle for approximately 45 minutes. Bensen was taken into custody just before 12:30 a.m. without further incident. Traffic in both directions on Interstate 15 was blocked for approximately 45 minutes. Bensen was booked into the Bonneville County Jail.

On October 1 2019 at approximately 6:15 PM, the Idaho State Police responded to an injury crash blocking traffic on US95 milepost 520, north of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. A white 2011 Ford F250 pickup driven by Dexter Jantz (19 year old of Bonners Ferry) was southbound, and turned left of center to avoid a vehicle. Jantz went into a broad slide and ran into northbound traffic, colliding with a blue 2016 Honda HRV driven by Claudia Kamp (58 year old of Cranbrook, British Columbia). Jantz and his juvenile passenger were not wearing seatbelts, but were not injured. Kamp was transported by air ambulance to Kootenai Health with non-lifethreatening injuries. Kamp was wearing a seatbelt. The roadway was blocked or delayed for approximately three hours. Weather does not appear to have been a factor. Investigation continues.
