Idaho is about to enter the annual "100 Deadliest Days of Driving," the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year. In 2017, 90 people died on Idaho's roadways during that timeframe. Local and State law enforcement agencies are teaming up to educate Idahoans on the best ways to arrive alive at your destination. During the 100 Deadliest Days, Idaho State Police will team up with local law enforcement agencies and deploy across the region to aggressively apprehend impaired drivers. Troopers and officers will be looking for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and other substances - as well as aggressive drivers - to enhance public safety.

Idaho law enforcement agencies want to remind drivers of the simple things that can save your life and the lives of your loved ones. In coordination with the Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety, we are working toward zero impaired deaths.
- Buckle up - it's the best defense if you're in a crash
- Slow down, be patient. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you're going.
- Drive sober! Impaired driving is a leading cause of accidents and resulting injuries and deaths on our roadways. Law enforcement will be watching closely this summer for signs of impaired driving.
- Just drive. Put down your phone and other distractions such as food.
- Give yourself some distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Use the three-second rule.
- Promptly report suspected impaired drivers and other hazardous drivers to law enforcement. On your mobile phone, dial *ISP (*477) or just dial 9-1-1.

The annual Border to Border (B2B) initiative commences Monday, May 21 and Idaho State Police will be emphasizing seat belt use for that entire week. B2B is a national campaign and uses the catch phrase "Click It or Ticket." Nationally, state highway patrol offices and their law enforcement partners will coordinate highly visible seat belt law enforcement and they will provide seat belt fact sheets for drivers at highly traveled, highly visible state border locations.

"It's proven that we achieve more when state and local law enforcement agencies work together to achieve seat belt law compliance," said Lt. Col. Sheldon Kelley, ISP deputy director. "It doesn't mean we want to write more tickets but it does mean we want to save more lives."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2016 were unrestrained. During this year's campaign, NHTSA is urging law enforcement agencies to issue seat belt citations to anyone caught in violation of the law, day or night. This is a special consideration for nighttime driving, when 56 percent of those killed are unrestrained.

Nationally, the seat belt use rate is currently 90.1 percent, according to NHTSA's 2016 data. That's up from 88.5% in 2015 but that means 9.9% - or some 32 million people - are still not buckling up. Idaho State Police Troopers know the lives of many Idahoans could be saved if they'd simply buckle up.

News release / Media advisory: National Police Week events in Idaho

Media advisory
May 14, 2018
Contact: Tim Marsano, ISP PIO, 208.884.7122

National Police Week events in Idaho

The week of May 13-19 is designated as National Police Week, which is an opportunity to recognize and pay tribute to law enforcement officers from around our nation and throughout Idaho who have made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the citizens whom we protect and serve each day.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Here in Idaho, events will center on the Idaho Peace Officers Memorial, located in Meridian. The memorial serves as a place of solace for the families of fallen peace officers and also honors those currently serving.

Reporters and members of the public are invited to:
- Candlelight vigil on Wednesday, May 16 at 9 p.m.
- Annual ceremony on Thursday, May 17 at 10 a.m.
Both events will be led by ISP Lt. Col. Sheldon Kelley in his capacity as president of the Idaho Peace Officer Memorial Board of Directors. Both events will take place at the Idaho Peace Officers Memorial on the grounds of the Idaho State Police Headquarters complex, 700 S. Stratford Drive, Meridian.

On May 11, 2018, at approximately 1:38 pm, the Idaho State Police responded to an injury crash northbound US95 at Chambers Road near Culdesac, ID. A maroon 1997 Ford F150, pulling a boat, was traveling northbound on US95. The Ford was being driven by Steven Eckhart (31) of Coeur d Alene, ID when it went off the northbound side of US95 near Chambers road. The Ford and boat continued northbound off the roadway, and impacted the small embankment leading up to Chambers road, causing the Ford to go airborne. Both the Ford and Dodge, after impact, came to a final rest in the southbound lane of US 95. Eckhart was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the Ford. Tannahill was wearing a seatbelt. Due to the severity of Eckharts injuries, he was flown to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. Eckhart was then flown by Life Flight to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA.
