Aggressive Driving Emphasis Patrols Occurring Now Throughout Idaho

MERIDIAN - Now through March 11, Idaho State Police and law enforcement partners across Idaho are joining forces to stop aggressive driving. Expect extra law enforcement on our roadways to focus on education and enforcement.

Preliminary 2022 data from the Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) shows over 14,000 aggressive driving crashes in Idaho and 39 percent of all fatal crashes involved some form of aggressive driving behavior.

"Aggressive driving is dangerous driving," says Captain Chris Weadick of District 6 in Idaho Falls. "As our roadways continue seeing increased traffic volumes, ISP responds to more calls of aggressive driving and collisions. We want people to slow down and pay attention to their driving so everyone arrives at their destination safely."

Examples of aggressive driving:
-Blocking cars attempting to change lanes
-Changing lanes without signaling
-Cutting in front of another driver, then slowing down
-Driving too fast for conditions
-Failing to yield or stop for traffic lights and stop signs
-Passing on the wrong side of the road or on the shoulder
-Screaming, honking, or flashing lights
-Speeding
-Tailgating
-Weaving in and out of traffic

"Every day, Idahoans do the right thing but sometimes frustration boils over and aggressive driving behaviors puts others at risk," Weadick says. "Speed and failure to follow traffic laws are factors in almost every crash - which are preventable. Remember to make driving a priority and do your part to remain calm and keep our roads safe."

Build safe driving habits into your routine and set a good example for those around you. If an aggressive driver is nearby, safely get out of the way, stay calm, ignore gestures, and report the vehicle's location and direction of travel to 911 or *ISP (*477).

With Idaho Office of Highway Safety (OHS) grant funding, extra troopers will patrol high-traffic areas looking for motorists exceeding the speed limit or driving aggressively. (https://shift-idaho.org/aggressive-driving/)

Male arrested after a vehicle pursuit and area search

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho ? Local law enforcement tracked and arrested a male for eluding after leading them on a vehicle chase and running from his vehicle.

Early this morning, law enforcement from St. Regis, Montana, advised the Idaho State Police (ISP) of a rented 2023 Chevy Tahoe that had been in the area of a suspicious death believed to be a drug overdose. Authorities thought the Tahoe would head to Washington State, and St. Regis requested help identifying the vehicle and its occupants. ISP advised area law enforcement of the request.

At about 10:20 a.m., a Shoshone County Sheriff's Office deputy located the Tahoe on westbound I-90 near milepost 54 and attempted a traffic stop. The Tahoe did not stop, and the deputy initiated a pursuit. The Tahoe exited at milepost 40 and continued toward Latour Creek near Dudley Rd and Buckner Rd, where the deputy lost sight of the vehicle. However, the unoccupied Tahoe was found nearby, with drugs and guns inside.

Knowing the occupants were potentially armed, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office assisted ISP and Shoshone County units with tracking dogs and additional personnel. At about noon, law enforcement found and detained a female. About an hour later, law enforcement also located a male walking on a public roadway, where he was taken into custody without incident.

The male, a 35-year-old from Washington, was booked into the Kootenai County Jail on probable cause for eluding and an outstanding arrest warrant. The female, a Washington woman in her 30's, is expected to be released. The Tahoe was impounded. Troopers continue to investigate the incident.

Throughout the search, Shoshone County Sheriff Linsey provided several social media updates to warn area residents of potential danger. Law enforcement believes all suspects are in custody, and there is no known threat to the community. If area residents locate possible contraband or evidence, please do not touch it and call 911 so law enforcement can respond.

Become a Trooper with the Idaho State Police!

The Idaho State Police (ISP) is accepting applications from exceptional candidates to join a team of dedicated professionals serving the people of Idaho. As a statewide law enforcement agency, commissioned troopers specialize in highway safety and traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, commercial vehicle safety, and alcohol beverage control.

"ISP is an excellent career choice for those interested in joining law enforcement to serve others. We are looking for both entry-level and lateral candidates," said ISP Cpt. Sam Ketchum, who oversees the Training division. "Our agency is unique in the freedoms and benefits our troopers experience with our training, equipment, ability to join specialty positions, and the overall variety of opportunities offered."

Applications for entry-level and lateral trooper positions are open and accepted through February 26. Anyone interested can find additional information at https://qrco.de/bdS0GQ.

"ISP is an exciting place to serve and build a career. Our benefits make a difference; from continuing education, excellent health and retirement benefits, pay increases, and options to serve where you want to live, our troopers have opportunities not often found elsewhere," said Cpt. Ketchum.

Physical and oral board testing will begin for selected applicants after February 26, with the next Advanced Training Class beginning in July.

"Law enforcement is a tough but rewarding career and not suited for everyone. However, the greatest part of working for ISP is your teammates and working in healthy, successful communities throughout the state. The people of ISP are proud to serve in Idaho, and we are sincerely grateful for the strong community support. It's the people who make a real difference," said Cpt. Ketchum.
