Update: Caldwell man charged following fatal crash in Canyon County

Idaho State Police arrested a Caldwell man after multiple witnesses reported he'd been driving aggressively just prior to losing control of his vehicle and colliding head-on with another vehicle Tuesday on State Highway 19 in Greenleaf. The driver of the vehicle hit by the suspect, a 35-year-old man from Nampa, died of his injuries.

Arrested: Pedro J. Avalos, 30, Caldwell
Charged: Vehicular Manslaughter (F), Injury to a Child (m)

Troopers would like to thank the motorists who stopped at the crash site and reported the behavior they'd seen from the suspect driver just prior to the crash.
Troopers also found evidence the suspect was driving with a young child in the vehicle. The child was not injured.
The suspect was booked into the Canyon County Jail on the above charges.

This crash remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police, with assistance from the Canyon County Sheriff's Office.

On Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at approximately 4:19 p.m., Idaho State Police investigated a two-vehicle, fatality crash on State Highway 19 at milepost 14, Simplot Blvd near Notus Rd, in Greenleaf.

Pedro Avalos, 30, of Nyssa, Oregon, was driving westbound on SH19 in a 2021 Toyota Camry. Adam Hawthorne, 35, of Nampa, was driving eastbound on SH19 in a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup. Avalos crossed the center line, collided head on with Hawthorne, and the Ford Ranger rolled. Both vehicles came to rest on the right shoulder.

Hawthorne was transported by ground ambulance to St Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Nampa where he succumbed to his injuries. Next of kin has been notified. Avalos was transported by ground ambulance to West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell.

Both eastbound lanes of SH19 and the left lane of westbound SH19 were blocked for approximately 4 hours while crews cleared the scene. Idaho State Police was assisted by Canyon County Sheriff's office. This crash is still under investigation.
