On Sunday, September 4, 2011 at 2:57 pm, the Idaho State Police received a report from the Bingham County Sheriff's dispatch of a vehicle driving erratically in the northbound lanes of I-15 near milepost 95, near Blackfoot. Trooper Caldera was in the area and responded, locating the vehicle at milepost 104.

Trooper Caldera observed the erratic driving behavior and developed probable cause to stop the vehicle. He initiated the stop but the vehicle did not yield and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle, a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue, was being driven by Tracy Nii, age 51 of Idaho Falls. Officers were able to spike the tires of the vehicle near exit 113 of I-15. The vehicle continued on for another 3 miles with damaged tires until officers were able to use the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver to bring the vehicle to a stop at exit 116, the Sunnyside Road exit. Contact with Mr. Nii revealed medical issues and he was taken to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

Trooper Caldera was assisted by Idaho State Police Sergeant Zaugg, and Corporals V.Cox, Goody, and Egbert.
