MERIDIAN - On Monday, March 23rd at about 6:23 a.m., an Idaho State Trooper attempted to stop a silver 2001 Volkswagen Beetle traveling on EB I-84 near the Broadway exit in Boise for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Robert Steven VanHulle, 44 of Boise, failed to stop on I-84, took the Broadway exit off I-84, proceeded north on Broadway Ave. and then right onto Federal Way while maintaining the speed limit but with the trooper following with his emergency lights activated. VanHulle proceeded into the parking lot of a shopping center on the 3500 block of Federal Way before he stopped, abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot through the parking lot of the shopping center. The trooper pursued VanHulle on foot and was able to apprehend him. VanHulle resisted the trooper's attempts to place him under arrest until two citizens assisted the trooper in subduing the suspect until he was placed in handcuffs.

VanHulle was taken into custody without further incident and charged with Misdemeanor Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (Second Offense), Misdemeanor Resisting and Obstructing Officers, Misdemeanor Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Peace Officer, Misdemeanor Driving Without Privileges, and Misdemeanor Failure to Use Ignition Interlock Device. VanHulle was booked into the Ada County Jail.
