The Idaho State Police ATC is a 14-week program that ISP recruits must complete after the 10-week Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Academy that all police officers in Idaho must complete to be certified in Idaho.

Upon graduation the newly commissioned Troopers will be assigned to one of six districts throughout the state of Idaho to complete a field training program that lasts approximately 12 weeks. During this stage the new Troopers will work with a series of experienced Troopers who will teach, evaluate and document each of them in an on-the-job setting. The positions that the new Troopers will be filling were vacant due to attrition within the ranks of ISP and are not new positions.

During ATC recruits are trained to assume responsibilities of an Idaho State Trooper which include, but are not limited to:
  • Traffic control and enforcement
  • Motor vehicle crash investigations
  • Criminal investigations
  • Report writing
  • Crime scene processing and investigation
  • Courtroom procedure
  • Firearms and defensive weapons
  • Communication techniques including public speaking
  • Ethics
  • Assist city and county law enforcement agencies as requested
ISP will actively be recruiting new Troopers with a job announcement to be published on July 1st. Anyone interested in learning more about the Idaho State Police or in applying to be an ISP Trooper should visit the ISP website at www.isp.idaho.gov and add their name to the hiring notification database.
