Critical Incident Task Force Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting

LEWISTON, Idaho - Detectives with the District Two Officer-Involved Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) are investigating a non-fatal officer-involved shooting (OIS) that occurred after a traffic stop in Lewiston.

Just before 2 a.m. this morning, a Lewiston Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle refused to stop and fled towards Powers Ave. At a roundabout, the driver discharged a firearm at the officer and continued eastbound on Powers Ave. Additional officers arrived to assist, and the incident resulted in an OIS that included Lewiston Police officers and Nez Perce County deputies. When the vehicle stopped, the driver was taken into custody.

Officers provided the driver, a 32-year-old Lewiston man, emergency medical aid until the Lewiston Fire Department arrived and assumed treatment. He was transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

No law enforcement officers were injured, and no additional injuries were reported.

The roadway remains closed for the investigation and detectives believe it will open this afternoon. Closure signs have been placed at the intersection of the first block leading up to the traffic circle on each intersecting street.

The CITF is investigating the incident, with the Idaho State Police taking the lead. CITF is a team of investigators and professional staff from local law enforcement agencies who provide investigative and other assistance to law enforcement agencies involved in police use of force and other critical incidents. The CITF works with the Prosecutor's Office, which reviews completed investigations.
