POCATELLO, Idaho - On July 2nd, 2024, the Idaho State Police Domestic Highway Enforcement (DHE) Team conducted a traffic stop near Pocatello, Idaho, which resulted in a significant drug seizure.
-------------------------------------------
While patrolling Interstate 86, a DHE trooper observed a white 2015 Hyundai Genesis with an invalid registration. A traffic stop was initiated. The driver, a 23-year-old female from Tulare, California, did not have a valid driver's license. Suspicious behavior was observed from the occupants. The trooper also detected the odor of marijuana coming from the Hyundai and observed marijuana products inside the vehicle. A thorough vehicle search was conducted. A 34-year-old female also from Tulare, California was booked into Bannock County Jail for Trafficking Methamphetamine. Two juvenile males were also arrested and booked into Bannock County Juvenile Detention Center for Trafficking Illegal Drugs.

"This seizure highlights our unwavering commitment to removing illegal drugs from our communities," stated DHE Canine Sergeant Chris Cottrell. "These dangerous substances pose significant risks to public health and safety, and we remain dedicated to protecting our citizens."

Stay Safe This July 4th: Idaho State Police and Local Agencies Promote Sober Driving

MERIDIAN, Idaho - As Independence Day approaches, the Idaho State Police (ISP) and law enforcement agencies throughout Idaho are collaborating with the Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety (OHS) to combat impaired driving. From July 3rd through 10th, law enforcement will increase efforts to prevent and apprehend drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

"Impaired driving doesn't just risk the driver's life; it endangers everyone in our community - our children, neighbors, and friends," says Colonel Kedrick Wills. "This Fourth of July, everyone should prioritize safety and responsibility. By planning for a sober ride, we can protect our loved ones and ensure everyone enjoys the holiday festivities safely."

Independence Day celebrations fall within the 100 Deadliest Days on Idaho roads - between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, marked by increased fatal accidents. Preliminary data from OHS shows that 31 people have lost their lives in crashes in Idaho since Memorial Day weekend this year.

Tips for Ensuring Safe Travel This Independence Day:
-Plan for a Sober Driver: Arrange for a sober ride before heading to a social event or a night out. This could be a friend, a family member, or a local taxi service.
-Consider Ride-Sharing Services: While rural areas may have limited ride-sharing options, look for services in nearby towns. Keep in mind areas with poor phone connectivity and plan accordingly.
-Host Safe Gatherings: If you're hosting a celebration that includes alcohol, offer non-alcoholic beverages and organize transportation for guests who need a sober ride home.

ISP plans to keep our roadways safe by focusing on these safety measures and partnering with local agencies. We are all responsible for ensuring a secure and joyful Independence Day for everyone in Idaho.

Visit shift-idaho.org for more information on the dangers of impaired driving and how your actions can make a difference.
