On August 11, 2021, approximately 5:50 p.m., Idaho State Police responded to an injury crash, southbound US95 near milepost 278, near Winchester, Idaho.

Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) was painting the roadway, causing traffic to slow in the area. Michael Cavin, 71, of Grangeville, Idaho, was traveling southbound on US95 in a 2000 Lincoln Towncar. Cavin failed to observe the slowed traffic, causing him to cross into a northbound turn lane, in order to avoid colliding with the rear vehicle. The northbound turn lane was occupied by the ITD paint vehicles and dismounted personnel.

Cavin attempted to re-enter the southbound lane of travel, however he struck the driver's side front of the ITD paint vehicle, nearly missing a ground crew member. The ground crew member sustained minor injuries from debris. Cavin continued traveling southbound in both the turn lane and southbound lane, striking the driver's side rear of an unoccupied flagger vehicle. Upon re-entering the southbound lane, Cavin struck a 2005 Dodge Ram, driven by Kyle Andrews, 36, of Lewiston, Idaho. Cavin then traveled left, across all lanes, exiting the roadway on the northbound shoulder.

Cavin was transported to Syringa Medical Center. Andrews was not transported. Both parties were wearing seatbelts.

The crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
