On September 22, 2017, approximately 3:12 pm, Wilma Baerlocher, 68, of Lewiston, ID, was driving northbound on US Highway 95 at milepost 291.9 in Nez Perce County in a Lexus SUV when she drove left of center into the southbound lane and struck a southbound Ford Ranger driven by a juvenile female. The Ranger came to rest blocking the southbound lane. After the collision, the Lexus crossed the southbound lane and drove off the roadway, rolled, and came to rest on its passenger side. A Hummer H3 driven Kimberly Schmidt, 49, of Greencreek, ID, was driving south behind the Ranger when the crash occurred. Schmidt drove off the southbound shoulder in an attempt to avoid being struck by the Lexus, but was unable to avoid a collision, and her vehicle was struck by the Lexus. Schmidt was extricated from the vehicle and transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Baerlocher and the juvenile female driver refused treatment. Baerlocher was cited for inattentive/careless driving. All drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Both lanes of US 95 were blocked for approximately two hours for crash investigation and vehicle recovery.
