After the trailer came loose from Schroeder's vehicle, Jeffry Andrews struck the trailer in the eastbound lane. The trailer was originally empty, but Andrews' pickup came to rest on top of the trailer in the lane of travel, causing some to report that there was a vehicle being towed on the trailer. Trevor Edwards was travelling behind Andrews in his Nissan Versa, and struck Andrews' vehicle on the drivers' side. Jeffry Andrews and his passenger, Sharon Andrews, age 65, live in Rigby. Sharon Andrews was not wearing her seatbelt, and she and Jeffry were transported to the hospital. Martinez was a passenger in Colton Schroeder's vehicle, was wearing his seatbelt, and was not injured.

On Friday May 20, 2016, at approximately 4:28 pm, the Idaho State Police investigated a four- vehicle injury crash on US20 near milepost 313, Hitt Road. Colton Schroeder, 19 of Blackfoot, was westbound in a 2008 Chevrolet pickup towing a trailer with a vehicle on it. The trailer came unhooked from the pickup and crossed through the median, striking a 2004 Chevrolet pickup on the eastbound lane, driven by Jeffry Andrews, 68 of Eatonville, Washington. Eaton's vehicle was rear-ended by a 2007 Nissan Versa, driven by Trevor Edwards, 38 of Rigby. The fourth vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Christopher Briggs, 50 of Rigby, received damage from debris at the crash scene.

Andrews and his passenger, Joey Martinez, 18 of Blackfoot, were transported by ground ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. All occupants, except Martinez were wearing seatbelts.

The crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
