On Thursday, January 21, 2016, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Idaho State Police investigated a motorcycle crash on the westbound I-84 137 on-ramp. Thomas H. Wheeler Jr., 67, of Spokane Valley, Washington, was driving a 2008 Honda motorcycle on the on-ramp and lost control. Wheeler went off of the on-ramp into the gore area, where his motorcycle went airborne and flipped. Both Wheeler and the motorcycle came to rest in the median.

Wheeler was transported via ground ambulance to the Bliss Rest Area where an air ambulance transported him to St. Alphonsus in Boise. Wheeler was not wearing a helmet.
