On Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at approximately 8:19 p.m., a crash involving two tractor-trailers occurred on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 at milepost 196, east of Hazelton. A 2013 Freightliner pulling a bulk cargo tanker, driven by Matthew Eveland, 48 of Pocatello, was heading eastbound when his trailer sustained a blown tire. Eveland attempted to continue traveling eastbound when his truck was struck from behind by a 2013 Freightliner, hauling onions, driven by Christopher Torrance, 48 of Ontario, Oregon. The crash caused the onion truck cab to catch fire. The bulk tanker went off the road and rolled onto its side. The tanker was carrying a hazardous chemical, which resulted in the complete blockage of the eastbound lanes as crews responded to the scene to clean up the chemicals. Torrance was transported via air ambulance to St. Luke's Magic Valley for injuries sustained in the crash.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 have been blocked for approximately 5 hours, and will remain blocked while the scene is being cleared.
