On December 5, 2013, at approximately 7:58 a.m., the Idaho State Police began an investigation of a two vehicle crash involving a 1998 Bluebird school bus and a 1974 Mack dump truck at the intersection of Deer Flat and Happy Valley Roads in rural Canyon County. The bus was transporting twelve elementary school age children to Crimson Point Elementary in Kuna.

Five children were injured in the crash. One child succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Canyon County Coroner's Office has identified the child as Daniel Robert Cook, age 11, of Nampa. Daniel's parents were notified shortly after the crash.

Four other children were transported to area hospitals. Two of the children had minor injuries and were released. The names of the children and their extent of their injuries are not being reported at this time. The children who were not injured were transported to school and were then released to their parents.

The school bus was traveling east on Deer Flat Road and the dump truck was traveling north on Happy Valley Road. The intersection is controlled by two stop signs posted for those traveling east and west on Deer Flat Road. The speed limit on both roads is 50 mph.

The driver of the school bus was Debra Boatwright, 56, of Kuna and the driver of the dump truck was Charles Derby, 33, of Nampa. Neither driver was physically injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police. The determination on whether there will be any charges in this crash will be made after the investigation is completed. The investigation may take several weeks to complete. Both roads were blocked for approximately 5 and a half hours.

Those assisting on scene were Canyon County Sheriff's Office, Ada County Sheriff's Office, Nampa Police Department, Nampa Fire Department, Kuna Rural Fire District, Canyon County Paramedics, Ada County Paramedics, Nampa Highway District and Idaho Transportation Department.
