On Tuesday, August 09, 2011, at approximately 2:39pm, the Idaho State Police investigated a non-injury vehicle vs. train crash on US26 at milepost 348, southwest of Ririe. Cheryl Spears, 64, of Irwin, Idaho, was driving a 2007 Ford Edge east on US26 when she failed to yield at a railroad crossing. The train, belonging to the Eastern Idaho Railroad, was travelling south. The railroad crossing lights were illuminated. Spears initially tried to brake, but then accelerated to pass in front of the train. The train struck the right rear side of her vehicle, causing minor damage to her vehicle. There was no damage to the train. Spears stated she was using her cell phone directly before the crash. The airbags did not deploy. The crash is being investigated by Sgt. Zaugg.
