Multiple Crashes on Interstate 84 Near the Garrity Exit

On Saturday, January 22, 2011, the Idaho State Police investigated multiple weather-related crashes in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 milepost 38, near the Garrity Exit in Nampa, ID. Heavy fog and icy roads contributed to these crashes.

The first crash involving a single vehicle was investigated at approximately 8:37 a.m. by Sgt. Sam Ketchum. Daniel Stewart, 51, of Meridian, ID was driving a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup. He lost control of his vehicle on the icy road and slid into the jersey barrier. It was determined that Stewart was traveling too fast for the road conditions. Stewart was wearing his seat belt. This investigation is continuing.

During the first investigation, at approximately 9:08 a.m., Sgt. Ketchum was in his 2009 Dodge Charger. Another vehicle struck Sgt. Ketchum's Charger. Sgt. Ketchum was transported by ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Nampa, ID. with minor injuries. This crash is under investigation by Nampa Police Department.

At approximately 09:15 a.m., Sandra Tripp, 58, of Boise, ID. was driving a 2006 Ford F150 pickup. Tripp also lost control of her vehicle on the icy road and slid into the jersey barrier. It was determined that Tripp was traveling too fast for the road conditions. Tripp was wearing her seat belt. This crash is under investigation by Master Cpl. Ed Robertson.

At approximately 10:04 a.m., Aaron Bingham, 36, of Buhl, ID was in traffic that was at a standstill due to the above crashes. Bingham was driving a 1999 Ford pickup and pulling a flatbed trailer. Nicholas Shanley, 30, of Boise, ID. was driving a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup. Shanley's vehicle struck the rear of Bingham's trailer. This was a non-reportable crash. Shanley and Bingham were wearing seat belts.

The westbound lanes of Interstate 84 were closed for approximately four hours.
Idaho State Police was assisted at the scene by Nampa Police Department, Nampa Fire Department, Canyon County EMS personnel and the Idaho Transportation Department.
