On August 6, 2018 at 1:46 pm a fatal crash occurred on US95 at milepost 534.9, north of Bonners Ferry. A grey 2007 BMW 335I driven by Spencer L Ritchie, 18, of Calgary, Alberta crossed left of center, striking another vehicle head on. The BMW left the road down an embankment. Ritchie was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified. The other vehicle, a 2017 Ford Expedition, pulling a camping trailer came to rest in the lanes of travel. The driver of the Expedition, Daniel D Machado, 39, of Manteca, California, was transported by air to Kootenai Health. Kimberly A Machado, 36, of Manteca, CA and four juveniles sustained minor injuries. Seatbelts were used by everyone involved.
