On June 14, 2018, just after midnight, the Idaho State Police investigated an injury crash near Cataldo, Idaho. Melissa K. Matuu, 29 year old female of Cheyenne, Wyoming was traveling westbound I90 near milepost 36 in a white 2014 Toyota Tundra when an elk crossed into the path of the vehicle and was struck. Matuu's vehicle was disabled and came to stop in the right-hand lane of travel. Passenger, Seth Matuu, 32 year old male of Cheyenne, Wyoming, got out of the vehicle and was trying to get three young children out of the vehicle when a semi-truck rear ended them. Matuu's pickup went off the roadway, onto the right shoulder and down an embankment. The 2016 Volvo semi-tractor, driven by Sergey I. Gud, 33 year old male of Federal Way, Washington, went off the left shoulder and came to a stop in the median. The Matuu family were removing seatbelts and child restraints at the time the semi impacted them and were all transported to Kootenai Health.
