Update for the vehicle versus bicyclist collision from 10/17/2017 in Coeur d'Alene and ISP's request for community assistance:

Update for the vehicle versus bicyclist collision from 10/17/2017 in Coeur d'Alene and ISP's request for community assistance:

Idaho State Police Troopers are continuing to investigate the fatal vehicle versus bicycle collision which occurred on October 17, 2017, at approximately 2155 hours, on I-90 near milepost 15.5, in the eastern city limits of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Idaho State Police have confirmed the identity of the deceased bicyclist, a 48 year old adult male who has ties to the Spokane, Washington, area. The male's identity is being withheld as ISP personnel are still attempting to locate his next of kin. The male's identity will be released once notifications have been made.

Additionally, an ISP Trooper was en route to the male bicyclist at the time of the collision's occurrence. The male had been reported by a passing motorist to be riding in the right westbound travel lane of I-90.

The white GMC Sierra pick-up community members have reported as being on scene of the collision was not involved in the collision. The driver of the GMC was a good Samaritan who stopped to render aid to the downed bicyclist.

Further, investigation of the scene has revealed the bicyclist was riding the bicycle in the right westbound travel lane of I-90 at the time he was struck. The cyclist was on a black bicycle, wearing low contrast clothing not conspicuous to passing motorists, a headlamp, no rear lighting on the bicycle, and riding in an area with no ambient lighting such as street lights or other illumination. The collision occurred in a sweeping right corner of westbound traffic, and the bicyclist was thrown onto the westbound shoulder after colliding with the vehicle.

ISP Troopers are soliciting the public's help in locating the involved vehicle which is possibly orange in color, or possibly partially orange and partially red. The involved vehicle may possibly have damage to its right side mirror, right side fender, hood, and/or windshield. ISP personnel are looking to interview the driver, and any occupants of the vehicle, which struck the bicyclist. Anyone with any information on the vehicle and/or the occupants is being requested to contact ISP at (208) 209-8730.

On Sunday night, Sep. 24, 2017, Robin Johnson, the wife of Craig Johnson (the deceased), called the Bonner County Sheriff's office and requested a deputy travel to their residence in Coolin, Idaho for a welfare check on her husband. Robin Johnson had been trying to contact him and he was not returning her phone calls. She was worried and requested law enforcement contact him to make sure he was okay. At approximately 11:54 p.m., a deputy responded to their Coolin residence for the welfare check. Craig Johnson immediately confronted the deputy by pointing a handgun at him and threatening him. The deputy sought cover behind his vehicle until he was able to safely retreat and leave the property.

A $30,000 felony warrant (Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer) was subsequently issued for Mr. Johnson's arrest.

The Bonner County Sheriff's Office conducted the service of the warrant on Tuesday morning, Sep. 26. During negotiations with Mr. Johnson via telephone and a police vehicle public address system, Craig Johnson exited his residence with a loaded handgun and confronted deputies by pointing a handgun at them, forcing them to respond with deadly force. Deputies at the scene immediately rendered first aid to Johnson. By standard operating procedure, an ambulance had been staged nearby and it responded to the scene, arriving within a few minutes. Mr. Johnson was transported by ambulance to a life flight landing zone. Mr. Johnson succumbed to his wounds en route to the landing zone.

The deputies involved were not injured. They have been placed on paid administrative leave, per standard protocol, pending the North Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation's outcome. The deputy who shot Craig Johnson is identified as Sergeant Shawn Deem, who has been with Bonner County Sheriff's Office for eight and a half years.

Update:

At approximately 9:43 AM this morning, September 25, 2017, the Idaho State Police investigated a crash on N 3800 E at the intersection of State Highway 50 in Twin Falls County. For clarification, the location of the crash was N 3800 E and Hwy 50, not E 3800 N as previously reported. Zackery Klundt, age 38, of Filer was driving eastbound on State Highway 50 turning southbound onto N 3800 E in a Peterbuilt semi pulling a tralier. Douglas Henage, age 59, of Jerome, was behind Klundt in a Kenworth semi pulling a trailer. As Klundt swung wide to the left to make the turn onto the county road, Henage mistook this move for a left turn and continued into the intersection. When Klundt moved back to the right to complete his turn, Henage struck Klundt's vehicle. The eastbound lane of travel was blocked for approximately two and a half hours, but is now clear and all lanes are flowing. The investigation is ongoing.
