Law Enforcement in the Magic Valley Targets Impaired Driving With Enhanced Patrols for the July 4th Holiday

IDAHO STATE POLICE NEWS RELEASE
Teresa Baker
Public Information Officer
Headquarters
700 S. Stratford Dr., Meridian 83642
(208) 884-7122
Fax (208) 884-7087

For Immediate Release: 6/29/16 at 3:25 p.m.

JEROME - While Idahoans will celebrate their independence over the July 4th weekend, law enforcement in the Magic Valley will be teaming up to target impaired drivers with high-visibility enforcement patrols to ensure everybody gets home safe. The enhanced patrols are possible through funding from the Idaho Department of Transportation's Office of Highway Safety.

The enhanced patrols will last through July 6th with the goal to first remind the public that law enforcement has a zero tolerance for drunk driving and, then, if the message is not heeded, to make arrests.

During the campaign, law enforcement will be watching for impaired drivers, as well as seat belt use. "Avoid driving any vehicle when 'buzzed,' drunk, or under the influence of drugs," says Idaho State Police Lt. Robert Rausch. He explains, "Make this holiday memorable in a positive way, not by injuring or killing somebody else or yourself."

Over the July 4th holiday weekend in 2015, there were 25 crashes in Idaho where alcohol was involved. Of these 25 crashes, 11 of them involved injuries and three people lost their lives.

You can easily avoid a becoming a DUI statistic but you must PLAN AHEAD:

- Plan ahead and designate a sober driver before drinking and give them your keys.

- If you are impaired, call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.

- If you go to a bar, check with the employees, many bars have programs to give patrons a free ride home.

- If a friend is about to drive impaired, take his or her keys and help make other transportation arrangements.

- Promptly report suspected drunk drivers you see on roadways to law enforcement. Call the Idaho State Police on your mobile phone at *ISP (*477) or simply dial 9-1-1.

For all motorists on the roadways, "Your best defense against drunk drivers is to always buckle up and pay attention to your surroundings and other drivers," Lt. Rausch said.

MEDIA:

Law enforcement will kick-off the impaired driving emphasis patrols with a joint training 9:00 am at the Idaho State Police District 4 Office located at 218 West Yakima in Jerome.

Jared Olson, Idaho Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor, will provide a brief legal update to law enforcement from 9:00 to 10:30 am. Beginning at 10:30 am there will be interview and photograph opportunities with the multiple participating Magic Valley law enforcement agencies.

Summer Driving Season Is In Full Swing - Do You Know What to Do If Your Vehicle Breaks Down?

IDAHO STATE POLICE NEWS RELEASE
Teresa Baker
Public Information Officer
Headquarters
700 S. Stratford Dr., Meridian 83642
(208) 884-7122
Fax (208) 884-7087

For Immediate Release: 6/29/16 at 11:15 a.m.

MERIDIAN - With the temperatures rising along with the number of vehicles on the road, Idaho State Police want you to know what to do if your car breaks down on one of Idaho's highways or interstates.

If your vehicle breaks down the Idaho State Police offer the following safety advice to allow you time to retrieve your vehicle before it is subject to being towed:

- Move your vehicle completely off of the pavement and onto the dirt on the shoulder of the road. Make sure all of your tires are off of the pavement.

- Use extreme caution at all times due to passing traffic and stay out of the lane of travel when attending to your vehicle.

- Turn your flashers on so that your vehicle can be more easily seen by other drivers.

- Call *ISP (*477) from your mobile phone and let dispatch know when you expect to retrieve your vehicle along with your contact information.

- It is also a good idea to leave a note on the dash with your name and a current phone number so that you may be contacted.

ISP will attempt to reach you before towing your vehicle if at all possible. If a vehicle is completely off of the pavement of the road, the general towing policy allows a motorist 48 hours to retrieve it before it is towed. However, if any part of the vehicle is left on the pavement it will be towed by dark. Additionally, if the vehicle is left in a location deemed a hazard, even if it is off of the pavement, it may be towed immediately. The owner of the vehicle is responsible for all towing and storage fees and is also liable for completely abandoning a vehicle.

If you are traveling in the Treasure Valley on I-84 between the Eisenman Road exit in Ada County and the Idaho 44/Middleton exit in Canyon County there is only a 3-hour grace period before a vehicle is towed but it may be towed immediately if it is left in a hazardous location.

ISP suggests that you be prepared for the unexpected and always travel with extra water, food and shelter from the sun such as an umbrella, in the event your vehicle breaks down or you are delayed in traffic due to a crash. Additionally, make sure that your vehicle is in good operating condition and that you have a full tank of gas even if you believe it will be a shorter trip.

There have been instances in the past few weeks where highways and interstates in rural locations have been closed for extended periods of time due to fatal vehicle crashes. Troopers, local law enforcement and the Idaho Transportation Department work diligently to get traffic diverted, lanes open and traffic flowing as quickly as possible.

Stay up-to-date with the latest road reports from the Idaho Transportation Department by calling 5-1-1 or visiting 511.idaho.gov. Updates are also available via Twitter @IdahoStPolice.

AMBER Alert Issued for Three Caldwell Children - Last Spotted in Nevada and California

The Idaho State Police has issued an AMBER Alert for three Caldwell children that are believed to be traveling with Jason "Travis" Simon, 37 of Caldwell, who is wanted for questioning in a child sexual abuse case.  This alert was issued today at the request of the Caldwell Police Department after new circumstances arose in the investigation concerning the missing children.

Two of the children, Lewis "Louie" Dunn, age 10, Kaylee Dunn, age 9, are the children of Sarah Joy VanOcker-Dunn, 38 of Nampa, and Jesse Dunn.  VanOcker-Dunn fled Idaho on June 2nd with Simon and his child, Kadyn Simon, age 6.

A change in circumstances arose which allowed the issuance of the AMBER Alert outside of the normal guidelines for an AMBER Alert when a felony arrest warrant for custodial interference for VanOcker-Dunn was issued.

VanOcker-Dunn, the mother of Louie and Kaylee, did not have Jesse Dunn’s permission to leave the Idaho with the children.  Simon is currently being sought for questioning in a child sexual abuse case out of Caldwell, Idaho.   All three children are believed to be in imminent danger at this time.

Simon, VanOcker-Dunn and the three children were last seen in Idaho at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2nd in Emmett where they obtained camping equipment from VanOcker-Dunn's parents' home.   Caldwell Police believe the duo could be in California as they were seen  in Arcata, California on Wednesday, June 8th, or they may be in Sparks, Nevada, as they were seen there yesterday, Sunday, June 12th.  They were last seen driving a gold 2006 Pontiac Montana with Idaho Plate 2CJN683, registered to VanOcker-Dunn's ex-husband Jesse Dunn. The whereabouts of Simon, VanOcker-Dunn and the children are currently unknown.

An arrest warrant for Simon for sex abuse of a child under 16 is now active out of Canyon County and an arrest warrant for VanOcker-Dunn has for felony custodial interference is also active out of Canyon County.

If contact is made with Simon, VanOcker-Dunn, or any of the children the public is advised to dial 9-1-1.  Please provide as accurate information on the location of any of those sought as possible.
