MERIDIAN - The Idaho State Police has accepted a request from the Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney's Office to investigate an anonymous complaint regarding Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue after the Idaho Attorney General's Office completed a preliminary investigation.

The Attorney General's Office conducted the preliminary investigation of the complaint pursuant to a law passed in 2014 designed to address allegations against county elected officials. This law is codified as section 31-2002, Idaho Code.

After a preliminary investigation the statute provides an option for the Attorney General's Office to refer the investigation to the county prosecuting attorney for further investigation. The Attorney General's Office and the Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney's Office have both cited a conflict of interest in conducting any further investigation.

The Idaho State Police will provide the results of their investigation to the Twin Falls County Prosecuting Attorney's Office who has agreed to act as a special prosecutor.
