MERIDIAN - The summer days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are known as the 100 deadliest days of the year on our state's highways. The Idaho State Police want to change this sad statistic and make Idaho's roads as safe as possible. Public awareness and enhanced patrols have been found to be an effective tool in improving driving safety and reducing crashes.

Therefore, ISP will hold an "All Hands on Deck" operation on Friday, June 27th. "All Hands on Deck" means that all available sworn ISP personnel, even those usually behind a desk or in a specialty assignment, will be on the road to increase patrols on a typical busy summer day.

"'All Hands on Deck' is designed to increase patrols on the busiest travel days of the year to give our citizens added safety on the roads," says Lt. Colonel Kedrick Wills. "This summer so far has been deadly on Idaho's highways. Since Memorial Day weekend, there have been 9 fatal crashes on Idaho's highways. ISP is committed to preventing crashes, injuries and deaths. Frequently, it is the sighting of a patrol car that makes people not only slow down, but obey other traffic laws as well. Therefore, all commissioned troopers available to work on Friday will be out patrolling Idaho's roadways."

ISP will combine the operation with increased public awareness of driving safety by participating in the Global Police Tweet-a-thon. The Global Police Tweet-a-thon is a twice a year event that lasts for 24 hours in each time zone. Each agency participating uses the hashtag #PolTwt. The first police tweet-a-thon happened in March of 2013 connecting law enforcement around the world and building relationships between police and the citizens they serve.

ISP will participate by "tweeting the beat" with a trooper on the road between the hours beginning on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and ending on Saturday at 12:00 a.m. The public can ride shotgun with the Idaho State Police on Twitter at @IdahoStPolice. Follow ISP and find out what a typical Friday night during the summer is like for a state trooper on patrol.

COEUR D'ALENE - Idaho State Police detectives continue to investigate a shooting involving three officers from the Coeur d'Alene Police Department that occurred on the evening of Friday, June 6th that resulted in the death of Thomas L. White, 28 of Coeur d'Alene.

The initial investigation has revealed that upon response to the domestic disturbance call on Dragon Fly at about 9:00 p.m., the first responding officers detected concern from the family regarding White's actions and his potential return to the house. After searching for White, officers located him in the backyard of a neighbor's residence. White went to the second floor deck of the neighbor's residence and the officers gave verbal commands to White. The officers, who had moved to the backyard corner of the house, saw that White was holding a gun. The officers told White to put the gun down and come down from the deck so they could talk with him. The officers made multiple requests to gain White's compliance. White then pointed the gun at the officers and ignored repeated commands to drop the gun, put his hands on his head, and come down the stairs. Mutual exchanges of shots were fired by White and three Coeur d'Alene officers. White was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers directly involved in the shooting are Sgt. Greg Moore, Officer Johann Schmitz and Officer Jacob Nielsen. Sgt. Moore has been with the Coeur d'Alene Police Department for 15 years, Officer Schmitz for 2 years and Officer Nielsen for 1 1/2 years.

Results of the autopsy are pending and detectives are continuing the investigation.

MERIDIAN - The Idaho State Police will be conducting an "Trooper on a Train" and "Adopt a Crossing" enforcement operation in cooperation with Operation Lifesaver and city and county law enforcement officers throughout western Idaho on Friday, June 13, 2014.

"The purpose of this enforcement operation is to increase public awareness of the potential dangers that exist at highway railroad intersections and to eliminate driver actions that can have tragic consequences," said Idaho State Police Sgt. Kirk Grothaus, "We hope that by letting the public know that we are focusing on enforcing the traffic laws that pertain to these intersections that they always be more careful near railways."

During the "Trooper on a Train" enforcement effort, one trooper rides in the lead locomotive of a train as a spotter. This trooper observes traffic approaching the highway rail intersections as the train proceeds down the tracks. Other troopers pace the train or are parked at specified locations. When a motorist is observed violating the laws pertaining to approaching a rail intersection, the trooper on the train radios the nearest trooper in a patrol car, with the information. That trooper will stop the motorist, explain the dangers and issue a citation, if warranted.

The "Adopt a Crossing" program will also take place on Friday. Idaho State Police and participating city and county law enforcement officers throughout western Idaho will pick a rail crossing within their jurisdiction and focus on enforcing the laws that pertain to that crossing.

During 2013, there were 15 car/train collisions reported in Idaho resulting in two fatalities and two additional people injured.

Since 1990, the "Trooper on a Train" and "Adopt a Crossing" programs have been instrumental in helping to reduce the number of car/train collisions in Idaho. State and federal transportation agencies, city, county and state law enforcement officers, along with the private business and the railroads that operate in Idaho sponsor the Idaho Operation Lifesaver program.

The Idaho State Police and Idaho Operation Lifesaver are proud to partner in eliminating car/train collisions, which result in preventable deaths and injuries. For additional information on Operation Lifesaver and their prevention efforts on the railways, visit their national website at www.oli.org, or to schedule a free presentation for your school or organization, please call Idaho Operation Lifesaver at 208-236-5626.

The Idaho State Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Section will be joining other agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and participating in the 27th annual Roadcheck Program beginning today, June 3 through June 5th.

Roadcheck, now in its 27th year, is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute from Canada to Mexico during a 72-hour period in early June. Each year, approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors in every jurisdiction across North America perform the truck and bus inspections.

Since its inception in 1988, roadside inspections conducted during Roadcheck have numbered over 1 million, resulting in more than 301 lives saved and 5,530 injuries avoided. It also provides an opportunity to educate industry and the general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operations and the roadside inspection program.

ISP's Commercial Vehicle Safety Section's mission is to improve the safety for all drivers on Idaho roadways. During the next three days troopers in Idaho will be inspecting commercial vehicles and drivers all across the state. They will focus on unsafe vehicles, vehicle equipment and drivers that can cause dangerous conditions on roadways.

"In 2013, over 30 people were killed in crashes involving commercial vehicles in Idaho. Even one fatality is too many." says ISP's Commercial Vehicle Safety Captain Bill Reese. "Our goal in participating in events like Roadcheck is to continue reducing the number of crashes and keeping Idaho's roads safe."

For more information visit our website at http://www.isp.idaho.gov/cvs/index.html or the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's website at http://www.cvsa.org/programs/int_roadcheck.php.
