Upon reflection of his days serving in law enforcement Captain Bunderson said, "I learned early on in my career that building positive working relationships was the only way to effectively provide quality law enforcement to the people of Idaho, the type of quality they expect from their law enforcement communities." He continued, "This includes not only relationships with public safety partners but also with legislators, the media and the community as a whole. We simply don't have the money and resources to go it alone, we have to depend on each other to keep our communities safe."

Bunderson started his career in January 1977 and was stationed at Cotterel Port of Entry for three years before he attended the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) in 1978. In 1980 he transferred to Rigby where he worked in commercial vehicle enforcement for approximately two years before he took a position in patrol. In 1983, he, along with six other troopers including his brother Brent, graduated from the Idaho State Police Academy.

Bunderson patrolled in ISP's District 6 in the Idaho Falls area for several years where he cultivated positive working relationships with the allied law enforcement agencies and excelled in DUI enforcement and drug interdiction. He also served as the District's fitness instructor and as a crash reconstructionist.

In 1986 Bunderson was selected to serve in ISP's newly formed Vehicle Theft Unit where he spent four years investigating vehicle thefts, title fraud and other associated criminal activity.

In the fall of 1990, after 13 years as a trooper, Bunderson was promoted to District 6 Patrol Sergeant and in the spring of 1991, he was then promoted to District 6 Patrol Lieutenant.

In the summer of 1997 Bunderson graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Shortly after his return from Quantico, he was promoted to District Commander of District 2, in Lewiston. While serving in that position, he was one of three ISP command staff responsible for developing the convention center and hotel security footprint for the Western Governors' Conference which was held in Coeur d'Alene in 2001 and the National Governors' Conference that was held in Boise in 2002.

In the fall of 2002, Bunderson returned to District 6 where he has served as the District Commander overseeing patrol and investigations operations for the past 12 years.

Bunderson stated, "I have always put the safety of the troopers and staff as a priority. This has included doing my best to get them the proper equipment to do their jobs." He is also proud of his part in contributing to the professional development and success of those under his command and has been pleased when some of those same troopers have gone on to become his supervisors.

Some of the significant accomplishments in Bunderson's career include:

- Part of the four member command staff committee that introduced to ISP the leadership philosophy of "life skills" that quickly become part of the agency's culture and still exists in many forms today.

- The reconstruction of the District 2 office after it sustained extensive damage it sustained when it was hit by a runaway truck from Lewiston Hill in April of 2000. The reconstruction was done without cost to Idaho taxpayers.

- Assisting Idaho numerous legislators in the drafting of Idaho's "Move Over" law with that protects public safety and tow truck personnel from potential harm caused by passing motorists during traffic stops or while assisting motorists on roadways and interstates.

- Serving as a member of the governing board of Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force after collaborating with local sheriffs, police chiefs, county prosecutors and other ISP personnel in developing the critical incident protocol for officer involved shootings.

- Collaboration with several local law enforcement agencies, US Forest Service, Idaho Transportation Department and the Idaho Military Division's Public Safety Communications division in establishing a means of communication along the US12/US93/SH28 corridor by installing emergency call stations in preparation for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. These call stations are still in use today.

The Bunderson family will host a private, invitation-only retirement dinner in the Captain's honor for family and friends on January 10th in Idaho Falls.

Lieutenant Steve Davis, who has supervised District 6 Investigations for the past ten years has been promoted to Captain and will replace Bunderson as ISP's District 6 Commander beginning January 1st.

Treasure Valley Law Enforcement Unite to Stop Impaired Driving While Conducting Virtual Ride-Alongs on Twitter

IDAHO STATE POLICE NEWS RELEASE
Teresa Baker
Public Information Officer
Headquarters
700 S. Stratford Dr., Meridian 83642
(208) 884-7122
Fax (208) 884-7087

For Immediate Release: 12/18/14 at 8:20 a.m.

MERIDIAN - Law enforcement officers from across the Treasure Valley are teaming up to stop impaired driving this holiday season. The Boise, Caldwell, Meridian and Nampa Police Departments and the Idaho State Police, as part of the Treasure Valley DUI Task Force, are joining together to enforce impaired driving laws through the holiday season. Just as important as enforcement action is raising the public's awareness of the dangers of driving after drinking too much, using illegal substances or even taking over-the-counter or prescription medication that affect motor skills

"Whether you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, prescription or fillicit, the message is the same, don't get behind the wheel," says Idaho State Police Sgt. Jason Cagle. "The holidays are a time to bring family and friends together in celebration and, unfortunately, we see all too often multiple families destroyed by a deadly crash when a driver should not have been driving."

The Idaho Department of Transportation's Office of Highway Safety (OHS) reports that in 2013, there were more than 1,425 impaired driving crashes in the state of Idaho. As a result of these crashes there were 96 people killed and 228 people who sustained serious injury. Almost 45% of all fatalities on Idaho's roads and highways were the result of impaired driving. While the number of impaired driving crashes was down 2% from 2012, the fatalities that resulted from those crashes increased by 32%. These statistics are so startling that increased patrols are funded by grants from the OHS between November 27th and January 4th.

The officers and troopers who will be on patrol in the Treasure Valley on Friday night will hear from Kendra Koch whose daughter Araceli, age 8, lost her father Val in an impaired driving crash in Twin Falls on July 14, 2013. Also on hand for the kick-off of the patrols will be the volunteers and staff from Mothers Against Drunk Driving Idaho.

The public will be able to follow along on patrols on Friday as many of the agencies will be conducting "Tweet-Alongs" from the front seat of their patrol cars as they participate in the 4th Global Police Tweet-a-thon on Twitter.

The Global Police Tweet-a-thon is a twice a year event that lasts for 24 hours in each time zone. Each agency participating across the globe uses the hashtag #PolTwt. ISP will share information from the road with our DUI Strike Team troopers beginning on Friday at 8:00 p.m. and ending on Saturday at about 2:00 a.m. Idaho State Police can be found on Twitter at @IdahoStPolice.

You can easily avoid a becoming a DUI statistic but you must PLAN AHEAD.

- PLAN not drink and drive before you start drinking. Alcohol impairs a person's ability to determine if they should drive. You can't count on making the right decision after you've consumed alcohol!
- Designate a sober driver and give that person your keys.
- Plan to call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
- Offer non-alcoholic beverages when entertaining.
- Promptly report drunk drivers to 9-1-1 or *ISP (*477) on your mobile phone.
- Wear your seat belt. This is the best defense against an impaired driver.
- Friends don't let friends drive drunk or impaired. If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their car keys and make other safe travel arrangements to get them home, or offer a spare bedroom or sofa to "sleep it off."

MERIDIAN - Detectives with the Idaho State Police and agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Michael Stephen Dauber, 46 of Idaho City, on Monday for the first degree murder of Joshua James Reddington and for use of a firearm in the commission of a felony which is another felony. Dauber was served the arrest warrant obtained by the Boise County Prosecuting Attorney's Office at the Ada County Jail where he is currently awaiting trial for the murder of Steven Kalogerakos.

On October 7th detectives discovered the dismembered skeletal remains of Reddington in Boise County at a remote cabin at 13 Betty Lane and the property surrounding it. Detectives were led to the property after they received information while investigating the murder of Kalogerakos. Reddington's remains were positively identified by DNA by both the Idaho State Police Forensic Services and the FBI's Laboratory in Virginia.

Investigators believe that Reddington was killed shortly after he went missing on May 26, 2000, as he was last seen in Idaho City during that Memorial Day Weekend. Reddington was a resident of Salmon, Idaho and was 25 years old at the time of his death.

Idaho State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were assisted in this investigation by the Boise County Sheriff's Office, the Idaho City Police Department and the Lemhi County Sheriff's Office.

Dauber was arraigned this afternoon in 4th District Magistrate Court in Ada County. A preliminary hearing was set by the court for December 29th.

ISP arrested Dauber for the murder of Kalogerakos on March 12, 2014. Kalogerakos, age 42 at the time of his death, was also a resident of Idaho City and was first reported missing in January 2008. Idaho State Police recovered his remains in the desert southeast of Boise in October 2013.

IDAHO OPERATION LIFESAVER

Press Release For Immediate Release Press Release

IDAHO STATE POLICE

IDAHO FALLS, ID 83402

Idaho Operation Lifesaver
"Officer On A Train" and "Adopt A Crossing"

On Tuesday, December 16, City, County and State Law Enforcement Officers will be conducting an "Officer On A Train" and "Adopt A Crossing" enforcement operation in East Idaho.

The purpose of this enforcement operation is to increase public awareness of the potential dangers that exist at highway railroad intersections and eliminate driver actions that can have tragic consequences, by enforcing the traffic laws that pertain to these intersections. The enforcement program is one of three parts of the Operation Lifesaver effort, which include engineering and education, designed to eliminate car/train collisions.

During the "Officer On the Train" enforcement effort, one officer is placed in the lead locomotive of a train as a spotter. This officer observes driver behavior approaching the highway/rail intersections as the train proceeds down the tracks. Other officers pace the train or are parked at specific locations. When a motorist is observed violating the laws pertaining to the approaching intersection, the officer on the train radios one of the chase cars which will stop the motorist, explain the dangers and issue a citation.

During 2013, there were 19 car/train collisions and 4 pedestrian incidents resulting in 5 people being injured and 8 fatalities.

Since 1990, the "Officer On A Train" program has been instrumental in helping reduce the number of car train collisions in the state. City, County and State law enforcement, State and federal agencies, along with the private business and the railroads that operate in the state sponsor the Idaho Operation Lifesaver program.

Idaho Operation Lifesaver is dedicated to eliminating car train collisions, which result in preventable deaths and injuries. For additional information or to schedule a free presentation, call Idaho Operation Lifesaver @ 208-236-5626.
