The driver of the dump truck has been identified as Heber Lewis, 56, of Preston, ID. At the time of crash the train was north bound and the crossing is equipped with flashing red lights that were functioning properly. Next of kin has been notified.

On January 9th, 2013 at 10:09 a.m., the Idaho State Police investigated a fatality crash on State Highway 36 near milepost 127, just east of Dayton. A Franklin County dump truck was headed eastbound on State Highway 36. There was thick fog in the area. The dump truck struck the side of a train that was already in the railroad crossing near milepost 127. Multiple train cars were derailed, and the tracks were damaged in the crash.

The driver of the truck succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Their name is not being released at this time pending notification of the family.

Both lanes of State Highway 36 are blocked at this time. The investigation is continuing.
