ISP/ITD IMPAIRED DRIVING CAMPAIGN

ITD, ISP partner to stop impaired driving

June 29th, 2012 - July 13th, 2012

Idaho State Police and many local agencies throughout Idaho will be aggressively patrolling for impaired driver's using funding provided by Federal grants awarded to the Idaho Transportation Department, Office of Highway Safety. These impaired driving shifts are used to make state highways safer. ISP and ITD use this funding for educational campaigns and high-visibility impaired driving enforcement patrols. The current impaired driving campaign will be conducted from June 29, 2012, through July 13, 2012 in an effort to combat drunk and/or drugged driving.

The effort is part of Idaho's "Toward Zero Deaths" goal - to someday have no traffic deaths on Idaho's roads. Traffic deaths are not just numbers. They are family members and friends lost.

Avoid driving any vehicle when 'buzzed' or drunk. Avoid driving under the influence of any drugs or other intoxicating substances, it's not worth the risk, the risk of embarrassment, going to jail, the financial costs, possibility of losing your job, family strains, losing your driver's license, and the worst consequences of all; hurting or killing yourself or another person(s).

In 2010, there were 10,726 DUI arrests in Idaho and there were 96 fatalities resulting from impaired driving. In addition, there were 1,593 impaired driving crashes. 45.9% of all Idaho fatalities in 2010 were the result of impaired driving!

-Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.

-If you're impaired, call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.

-Promptly report drunk drivers you see on roadways to law enforcement. To contact the Idaho State Police, call *ISP (*477) or 208-525-7277.

-If you know someone who is about to drive impaired, take his or her keys and help make other transportation arrangements.

-The Impaired Driver is the "Grim Reaper"!

ITD, ISP partner to stop impaired driving

June 29th, 2012 - July 13th, 2012

Using federal grant funds, the Idaho Transportation Department is partnering with the Idaho State Police and many local agencies in the Magic and Wood River Valley to make state highways safer by funding education campaigns and high-visibility impaired driving enforcement patrols from June 29, 2012, through July 13, 2012.

"The effort is part of Idaho's Toward Zero Deaths' goal to someday have no traffic deaths on Idaho's roads. Traffic deaths are not just numbers. They are family members and friends lost," said Kevin Bechen, with ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety.

During the campaign, officers will be watching for impaired drivers. They also will check for seat belt use.

"Avoid driving any vehicle when 'buzzed' or drunk," said Lt. Kevin Haight. "It's not worth the risk. Not only do you risk injuring or killing yourself or someone else, but the financial costs of an arrest or crash are significant," he explained.

In 2010, there were 10,726 DUI arrests in Idaho and there were 96 fatalities resulting from impaired driving. In addition, there were 1,593 impaired driving crashes. 45.9% of all Idaho fatalities in 2010 were the result of impaired driving!

IDAHO OPERATION LIFESAVER "OFFICER ON A TRAIN" & "ADOPT A CROSSING"

IDAHO STATE POLICE

IDAHO FALLS ID 83402
208-525-7377

Press Release For Immediate Release Press Release

Idaho Operation Lifesaver
"Officer On A Train" and "Adopt A Crossing"

On Monday June 18, City, County and State Law Enforcement Officers will be conducting an "Officer On A Train" and "Adopt A Crossing" enforcement operation in East Idaho.

The purpose of this enforcement operation is to increase public awareness of the potential dangers that exist at highway railroad intersections and eliminate driver actions that can have tragic consequences, by enforcing the traffic laws that pertain to these intersections. The enforcement program is one of three parts of the Operation Lifesaver effort, which include engineering and education, designed to eliminate car/train collisions.

During the "Officer On the Train" enforcement effort, one officer is placed in the lead locomotive of a train as a spotter. This officer observes traffic approaching the highway rail intersections as the train proceeds down the tracks. Other officers pace the train or are parked at specific locations. When a motorist is observed violating the laws pertaining to the approaching intersection, the officer on the train radios one of the chase cars which stops the motorist, explain the dangers and issue a citation.

During 2011, there were 14 car/train collisions resulting in 2 people injured and 2 fatalities.

Since 1990, the "Officer On A Train" program has been instrumental in helping reduce the number of car train collisions in the state. City, County and State law enforcement, State and federal agencies, along with the private business and the railroads that operate in the state sponsor the Idaho Operation Lifesaver program.

Idaho Operation Lifesaver is dedicated to eliminating car train collisions, which result in preventable deaths and injuries. For additional information or to schedule a free presentation, call Idaho Operation Lifesaver @ 208-236-5626.
