**UPDATE**

On Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 7:30 am, Idaho State Police investigated a four-vehicle chain reaction crash on eastbound Interstate 84 just prior to the Eagle Road overpass.

Blaine Gibson, 42 of Downey, ID, in a 2010 Kenworth semi-tractor pulling two trailers was traveling east bound when traffic ahead of him stopped. Gibson failed to slow his vehicle enough and collided with a 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by Anthony Newland, age 40 of Meridian. Newland's Toyota then collided with the rear-end of a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by Erik Zizumbo, 30 of Kuna. Zizumbo's vehicle then was pushed into the back of a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Brittany Hafer, age 18 of Meridian.

Newland, Zizumbo, and Zizumbo's three passengers were transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise with non-life threatening injuries.

The two left lanes of eastbound traffic were blocked for a little more than one hour while emergency crews worked to clear the crash scene. This caused an eastbound traffic backup of approximately four miles.

This crash remains under investigation by Cpl. Vance.

Idaho Operation Lifesaver Enforcement Program
Officer on a Train

On Thursday October 27th, City, County and State law enforcement officers will be conducting an "Officer on a Train" enforcement operation.

During the "Officer on a Train"; enforcement runs, one officer is placed on the lead locomotive of a train as a spotter. This officer observes traffic approaching highway-railroad intersections as the train proceeds down the tracks. Other officers pace the train or are parked at specific intersections. When a motorist is observed violating the laws pertaining to highway-rail intersections, the officer on the train radios one of the chase cars, which stops the motorist and issues a citation.

The purpose of this enforcement effort is to increase public awareness of the potential dangers that exist at highway - railroad intersections, and eliminate driver actions that can have tragic consequences, by enforcing traffic laws pertaining to these intersections. The enforcement program is one of three parts of the Operation Lifesaver effort, which include engineering and education, designed to eliminate car train collisions.

In 2010, Idaho experienced 16 car train collisions resulting in 1 fatality and 4 people injured. This year there have been 10 car/train collisions resulting in 2 people injured and 2 fatalities. There have also been 2 pedestrian fatalities.

The "Officer on a Train" enforcement effort is conducted using freight trains, special passenger trains, and helpers which usually consist of two engines. Since 1990, the "Officer on a Train" program has expanded statewide, involving city, county and state law enforcement agencies, and all of the railroads in the state. This program has been highly instrumental in the reduction of car - train collisions in Idaho.

News Department Information Only
This Enforcement effort will be conducted between 6 am and 5 pm.

On Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at approximately 5:30 pm, Idaho State Police investigated a five car injury crash westbound on I84 at milepost 46, just east of Eagle Road. Lindsy McGrew, 16, of Meridian was taking the Eagle exit in her blue Mazda Tribute, behind her was Brittany Archuleta, 26 of Meridian in a teal Nissan Sentra, and behind her was Patricia, Jones, 29 of Boise in a red Pontiac Vibe. As McGrew was slowing for traffic on the off ramp, Archuleta rear ended McGrew, and then Jones rear ended Archuleta, causing Archuleta to strike McGrew a second time. This caused Jones' vehicle to spin to the left in front of Ruben Santos, 46, of Nampa who was driving a Valley Regional Transit bus, striking the front of the bus. Jones' vehicle continued to spin farther to the left and was struck by Connie Stahle, 57, of Melba, who was driving a white Dodge Caravan.

Jones was transported by ground ambulance to Saint Luke's Meridian with unknown injuries. All drivers were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol is not a factor in the crash. The interstate was closed down for approximately two hours until all vehicles were clear.

Master Corporal Nauman was assisted at the scene by Sgt. Cagle, Ada County Deputies and Fire Personnel, Meridian Police Department and Medical Personnel, as well as the Idaho Transportation Department. The crash is still under investigation.

On Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 10:05 am, Idaho State Police investigated a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 at milepost 172, one mile west of the Twin Falls interchange.

John Wakley, age 44 of Twin Falls, was traveling west on Interstate 84 when a commercial vehicle pulling a trailer in front of him slowed to turn around, improperly using a marked emergency vehicle crossover. Wakley could not slow his vehicle in time so he veered right to avoid a collision. Wakley's vehicle, a 1986 International tractor pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with hay, left the road off the right shoulder and overturned. Wakley was able to avoid colliding with any other vehicles and he was not injured when his vehicle overturned.

The crash remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police. Troopers are still trying to determine the driver and vehicle information of the vehicle that slowed to use the emergency crossover and caused the crash. Troopers believe it was a commercial vehicle being used for the Interstate 84 construction project in the area and are working with the construction company to complete the investigation.

On Wednesday, October 05, 2011 at 7:17 am, the Idaho State Police investigated a one vehicle crash on US Highway 93 at milepost 66 near Jerome, Idaho. Marcia Leal, age 28 of Jerome, was driving a 1999 Dodge Durango on the connector from Southbound US Highway 93 to Westbound 700 North Road when she hit several cows that were in the roadway. Ms. Leal and her infant passenger were not injured however 5 cows were killed in the crash. Sergeant Oliver said that darkness and fog contributed to the crash. The cattle were loose as a result of being chased through a fence by dogs or other wild animals during the night. Locating and corralling efforts were hindered by the fog and darkness and the roadway was blocked for approximately 2 hours for cleanup.

Sergeant Oliver was assisted at the scene by Jerome County Sheriff Deputies and the Idaho Transportation Department.

Sergeant Oliver wants to remind motorists to slow down during adverse weather conditions. As we near the winter months our weather patterns will be changing and motorists should start anticipating fog and slick roadways.
