SCHOOL BUSES

Now that school is back in session in most areas, The Idaho State Police with local law enforcement agencies want to warn motorists of the danger that may be just around the corner as thousands of Idaho school-age children are going to and from school. We remind motorists to take notice of speed limits in school zones and to slow down and watch for children. Slow down. It's the most obvious way to see what's going on around you.

Last year 97 of the 212 Idaho pedestrians involved in crashes (46 percent) were age 19 and younger. Based on traffic data collected by the Idaho Transportation Department, 26 percent of last year's injury and fatal pedestrian crashes involved children between the ages of 4 and 14.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed as compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.

School-age children face greater risks due to their inexperience on roadways and their risk-taking behavior. That's why it is so important for motorists and students to be on the lookout for each other, especially during the first few weeks of school.

Think before passing a school bus. Idaho Law says: "The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking from either direction any school bus stopped on the highway shall stop before reaching the school bus when there is in operation on a school bus the visual signals and the driver of a vehicle shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the visual signals are no longer actuated. Oncoming traffic on a highway of more than three (3) lanes is not required to stop upon meeting a school bus when visual signals are actuated."

The Idaho State Police will be partnering with local law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce school zone speed limits and school bus passing violations.

Roberta Martin, 66 of Moreland and a school bus driver for Snake River School District, was traveling northbound on SH39 just west of Riverside. Martin was slowing for another bus that was stopped when she noticed a child standing up toward the back of the bus. As Martin looked in her mirror and tried to get the child to sit down, she didn't realize that traffic had stopped and ran into the back of a 2009 Chevrolet Impala being driven by Jimmie Grant, 35 of Blackfoot.

Speeds were very slow and are not a factor in the crash. Grant was not injured, however, his two passengers were transported to Bingham Memorial Hospital by ground ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Neither Martin nor any of the children on the school bus were injured.

One northbound lane was blocked for about an hour while the crash was investigated and the injured were removed from the vehicle. Seatbelts were worn by all parties involved.

IDAHO STATE POLICE ARRESTS FUGITIVE SUSPECTS

Idaho State Police
1540 Foote Drive
Idaho Falls, ID 83402

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On August 25, 2011 at 6:00 PM, Idaho State Police Corporal Vance Cox stopped a 2007 Volkswagon Beetle for a traffic violation on Interstate 15 near milepost 120 in Bonneville County. The driver of the vehicle was Jennifer Cynthia Bock (31 years of age) and passenger Robert Robin Cropearedwolf (32 years of age) both from the Oakland, California area. Cpl. Cox initially arrested Cropearedwolf and Bock for drug charges.

A subsequent search and inventory of the vehicle revealed further evidence of crimes. Several US Passports were recovered that did not belong to the occupants of the vehicle. One of the passports had been altered with Cropearedwolf's photograph on it with a different name. Also a stolen checkbook, numerous driver's licenses and state identification cards along with jewelry, numerous electronics, 2-way radios, binoculars, bolt cutters and various instruments/tools commonly used during burglaries were found in the vehicle.

Along with the possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Cropearedwolf was charged with felony possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, providing false information to an officer, violation of protection order and at least one felony warrant out of California for burglary. Bock was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and possession of stolen property. Both were incarcerated at the Bonneville County Jail.

In the days since the arrest, Cpl. Cox discovered through his investigation that San Rafael, California Police Department has Cropearedwolf as a suspect in a string of burglaries to residences, businesses and churches in their area. California authorities believe Cropearedwolf is a suspect in numerous other cities. The Idaho State Police is working with numerous law enforcement agencies from the FBI, US Marshall's Office, Homeland Security and various other state and local authorities to gather as much information and evidence to determine the scale of crimes Cropearedwolf and Bock may be involved in. The FBI is investigating the stolen passports. ISP is continuing to investigate and gather evidence from electronic devices seized from the car to help solve any other active or pending cases from California to Idaho.
