On July 14, 2011 at 11:40 a.m. , Idaho State Police investigated a truck fire on US30 just east of Lava Hot Springs. The driver of the Hanson Oil Company tanker truck, Ronnie Lindstrom, 64 of Soda Springs, told police that he was eastbound on US30 starting up the Fish Creek Hill when the truck started having mechanical problems. Lindstrom pulled the truck over and saw flames coming from under the hood. Lindstrom tried unsuccessfully to stop the flames and the entire tractor and part of the attached tank were destroyed.

Fire engines from the cities of Lava Hot Springs, Arimo, McCammon, and Inkom, as well as the Bureau of Land Management, arrived on scene to extinguish the fire and save the remainder of the first tank. The towed tanker trailer was not damaged by the fire. Both tanks contained approximately 4,000 gallons of oil and no oil spilled out of the tanks during the incident.

US30 was blocked for over four hours and traffic was diverted onto Blazer Highway around the fire.

Idaho State Police was assisted at the scene by Bannock County and Caribou County Sheriff's Office, Idaho Transportation Department, and Idaho Forrest Service.

On Thursday June 30, 2011, at approximate 4:54 PM, the Idaho State Police investigated a five vehicle minor injury crash southbound on US Highway 93 at milepost 5.5, near the Nevada border. Robert Phelps, 66 of American Falls, Idaho, Jared Meisberger, 33 of Danielsville, Georgia, Juan Garcia-Perez, 28 of Jackpot, Nevada and Linda Henken, 63 of Emmett, Idaho were all stopped on US Highway 93 at milepost 5.5 due to construction. Joshua Vaughan, 23 of Buhl, Idaho, was traveling southbound in a 1999 Peterbuilt tractor pulling a 1990 Wilson commercial trailer. As Vaughan crested the hill, he was unable to stop his truck in time and struck Phelps' 2007 GMC Yukon. This caused a chain reaction pushing Phelps' vehicle into Meisberger's 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee which was pulling a 2004 U-Haul trailer. Meisberger's vehicle then pushed Perez-Garcia's 2006 Mazda passenger car into Henken's 2005 Mazda MZ6. Perez-Garcia and his son were transported by ground ambulance to Saint Luke's Magic Valley Hospital in Twin Falls with minor injuries. The northbound lane was blocked for approximately an hour and the southbound lane was blocked for approximately three hours. Seatbelts were worn by all of the occupants.

This crash is under investigation by Corporal Faller with assistance from Trooper Debie, Trooper Pohanka, Elko County deputies and EMS.
