On Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at approximately 12:12 pm, the Idaho State Police investigated a four vehicle fatality crash on US93 at milepost 61.4, north of Jerome. Byrus Gatewood, 47, of West Valley, UT in a Volvo tractor, along with Dayle Fowler, 62, of Hailey, ID, in a 2003 Lexus SUV, Jeffrey Bacon, 46, of Hailey, ID, in a 1999 Toyota 4Runner, and William Smallwood, 80, of Sun Valley, ID, a 2011 Kia Optima, were all travelling northbound on US93. Traffic was stopped in a construction zone, and for unknown reasons Fowler was outside of her vehicle. The Volvo tractor struck Fowler, and then struck the Lexus SUV, the Toyota 4Runner, and the Kia Optima. The tractor then came to rest on the right shoulder. Fowler was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the other drivers were injured. The occupants of all the vehicles were wearing their seatbelts. Weather was not a factor in the crash.
Corporal Hitt was assisted by Sergeant Oliver, Trooper Debie, Corporal Winn, Jerome County law enforcement, ambulance personnel and Idaho Transportation Department Personnel. The crash is still under investigation at this time.
