On 12/20/2010, approximately 1900 hours, Idaho State Police was involved in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle driven by Joshua A. Sotomayor,18 years old from Clearfield, Utah. It started when a motorist complained about a car dragging its bumper on I-84 in Minidoka County. TPR James Kilton found the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle did not yield and increased its speed. When TPR Kilton called in the license plate to dispatch it was confirmed that this vehicle was stolen out of Utah. This pursuit continued through Minidoka and Lincoln Counties with multiple agencies involved (ISP, Heyburn P.D., Minidoka Sheriff's Department, and Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, with Jerome County Sheriff's Department on standby). ISP called off the pursuit on State Hwy 24, Lincoln County, when the danger to the public due to the pursuit outweighed the apprehension of Sotomayor.

Sotomayor hid off the roadway for a short time as multiple troopers and deputies attempted to find his vehicle. Sotomayor then headed back toward the city of Paul, Idaho. TPR James Kilton again found Sotomayor and followed him for a short time. When Sotomayor began to speed up, to speeds of 80mph, TPR Kilton turned on his emergency lights to see if he would stop. Sotomayor again failed to yield. Sotomayor was driving toward the City of Paul at high speeds and was not able to maintain his lane. ISP again ended the pursuit because the danger to the public due to the pursuit outweighed the apprehension of Sotomayor.

Minidoka County did have some spike strips set up in the City of Paul, but Sotomayor went around them. Minidoka County Sheriff's Department did apprehend Sotomayor on 775 N. 600 W. in Minidoka County at 2013 hours. Minidoka County Sheriff's Department took Sotomayor into custody for possession of a stolen vehicle and felony eluding a police officer.

Impaired Driving Enforcement Patrols

Make good driving choices during this Christmas and New Years celebration

Christmas and New Year is a festive time for many that brings families and friends together, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare when loved ones choose to drive impaired.

The Idaho State Police in Region Two will be conducting high-visibility impaired driving enforcement patrols from December 17th through January 3rd.

The effort is part of Idaho's Toward Zero Deaths' goal to someday have no traffic deaths on Idaho's roads. Traffic deaths are not just numbers. They are family members and friends lost. The Idaho State Police wants everyone to make it home safely after holiday celebrations. Troopers will be watching for impaired drivers as well as checking for seat belt use.

If your Christmas and New Years celebration involves alcohol, avoid driving any vehicle and use a designated driver. Driving impaired is not worth the risk. Not only do you risk injuring or killing yourself or someone else, but the financial costs of an arrest or crash are significant. A few simple precautions before celebrating can prevent a drunk-driving tragedy. If you're impaired, call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely. Promptly report drunk drivers you see on roadways to law enforcement. To contact the Idaho State Police, call *ISP. If you know someone who is about to drive impaired, take his or her keys and help make other transportation arrangements. Be alert to other drivers actions and drive defensively. Remember to always wear your seatbelt.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ITD, ISP Troopers Partner To Stop Impaired Driving December 17 - January 3

Christmas and New Year's is a festive time for many that brings families and friends together, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare when loved ones choose to drive impaired.

Using federal grant funds, the Idaho Transportation Department is partnering with the Idaho State Police to make state highways safer by funding education campaigns and high-visibility impaired driving enforcement patrols from December 16 through January 3.

"The effort is part of Idaho's Toward Zero Deaths' goal to someday have no traffic deaths on Idaho's roads. Traffic deaths are not just numbers. They are family members and friends lost," said Kevin Bechen, with ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety. "We want everyone to make it home safely after holiday celebrations."

During the campaign, officers will be watching for impaired drivers. They also will check for seat belt use.

"If your holiday celebrations involve alcohol, avoid driving any vehicle when 'buzzed' or drunk," said Lt. Kevin Haight. "It's not worth the risk. Not only do you risk injuring or killing yourself or someone else, but the financial costs of an arrest or crash are significant," he explained.

In 2009, there were 12,327 DUI arrests in Idaho, resulting in 65 fatalities. 29% of all Idaho fatalities were the result of an impaired driving crash and 77% of those killed were not restrained.

- Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.
- If you're impaired, call a taxi, a sober friend or a family member to get you home safely.
- Promptly report drunk drivers you see on roadways to law enforcement. To contact the Idaho State Police, call *ISP or (208)736-3070.
- If you know someone who is about to drive impaired, take his or her keys and help make other transportation arrangements.

"Your best and only defense against drunk drivers is to always wear a seat belt and remain attentive to your surroundings and other drivers," Lt. Haight said.

On December 1, 2010, at approximately 8:05 am, the Idaho State Police investigated a three-vehicle crash on US20 at milepost 317, near the Bonneville/Jefferson County Line. Rebecca Bratt, age 22, of Idaho Falls, was traveling east on US20 in a silver 2005 Ford Taurus, when she lost control of her vehicle on the ice / snow covered road and crossed into the west travel lanes. Bratt's vehicle was broadsided by a silver 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by William Tanner, age 35, of Rexburg. Tanner's vehicle was then hit from behind by a commercial vehicle driven by Kael Martin, age 25, of Idaho Falls. Tanner was treated and released on location for minor injuries. Bratt was transported by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Martin was uninjured in the crash. All drivers were wearing seatbelts and Bratt was cited for driving too fast for the road conditions. ISP was assisted by the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office.

Twin Falls Police, Twin Falls County Sheriff, Idaho State Police partner to stop impaired driving

This time of year is a festive time for many, that brings families and friends together but can quickly turn into a nightmare when loved ones choose to drive impaired.

The Twin Falls Police and Twin Falls County Sheriff's Department is partnering with the Idaho State Police to make travel safer by performing high-visibility impaired driving enforcement patrols on December 10th, December 18th, and December 31st.

"The effort is part of local law enforcement's goal to have no traffic deaths or injuries on Idaho's roads," said Lt. Kevin Haight, with the Idaho State Police. "We want everyone to make it home safely after holiday celebrations."

During the patrols, officers will be watching for impaired drivers.

"If your Christmas and New Year's celebrations involve alcohol, avoid driving any vehicle when 'buzzed' or drunk," said Lt. Kevin Haight. "It's not worth the risk."

"Not only do you risk injuring or killing yourself or someone else, but the financial costs of an arrest or crash are significant," he explained.

A few simple precautions before celebrating can prevent a drunk-driving tragedy:
- Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.
- If you're impaired, call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
- Promptly report drunk drivers you see on roadways to law enforcement. To contact law enforcement, dial 911. You can also call the Idaho State Police at *ISP or 208-736-3070.
- If you know someone who is about to drive impaired, take his or her keys and help make other transportation arrangements.

"Your best and only defense against drunk drivers is to always wear a seat belt and remain attentive to your surroundings and other drivers," Lt. Haight said.
