Road back open

US95 is back open just south of Moscow. Winter driving conditions continue, and we suggest all non-essential traffic to stay off the highway. If you must be on the roadway take extreme caution due to white out conditions, ice over the roadways, and heavy winds. LAW ENFORCEMENT HOLIDAY TRAVEL CAMPAIGN

Idaho State Police
1540 Foote Drive
Idaho Falls, ID 83402
208-525-7377

Thanksgiving weekend is just around the corner and the Idaho State Police wants to remind motorists to stay safe during their travels. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is considered the busiest travel day of the year when many motorists take to the roads. Local law enforcement agencies including ISP have partnered with the Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety for the upcoming Impaired Mobilization Patrol. During these patrols, officers will have zero tolerance for alcohol violations. Many officers will be outfitted with portable breathalyzers and extra patrol personnel will be out keeping the roadways safe.

ISP reminds motorists to observe the Move Over Law, which requires motorists to slow down and move over if possible when approaching a stationary Authorized Emergency Vehicle displaying flashing lights. Every year there are a number of police officers that are killed nationwide while parked on the side of the road during the course of their duties. The Move Over Law helps protect the law enforcement officers and emergency service personnel who risk their lives protecting the public.

According to ITD, Eastern Idaho has the lowest rate of seatbelt usage and during these patrols, officers will have zero tolerance for non-seatbelt usage including passengers. The Impaired Mobilization Patrols, Move Over Law, and promoting seatbelt usage are all part of Idaho's "Toward Zero Deaths - Every Life Counts" campaign.

LAW ENFORCEMENT SAFE TRAVEL CAMPAIGN

ITD, ISP troopers partner to stop impaired driving
November 19 - November 30

Thanksgiving is a festive time for many that brings families and friends together, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare when loved ones choose to drive impaired.

Using federal grant funds, the Idaho Transportation Department is partnering with the Idaho State Police to make state highways safer by funding education campaigns and high-visibility impaired driving enforcement patrols from November 19 through November 30.

"The effort is part of Idaho's Toward Zero Deaths' goal to someday have no traffic deaths on Idaho's roads. Traffic deaths are not just numbers. They are family members and friends lost," said Kevin Bechen, with ITD's Office of Highway Operations and Safety. "We want everyone to make it home safely after holiday celebrations."

During the campaign, officers will be watching for impaired drivers. They also will check for seat belt use.

"If your Thanksgiving celebration involves alcohol, avoid driving any vehicle when 'buzzed' or drunk," said Lt. Kevin Haight. "It's not worth the risk."

"Not only do you risk injuring or killing yourself or someone else, but the financial costs of an arrest or crash are significant," he explained.

A few simple precautions before celebrating, can prevent a drunk-driving tragedy:
- Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.
- If you're impaired, call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
- Promptly report drunk drivers you see on roadways to law enforcement. To contact the Idaho State Police, call *ISP or 208-736-3070.
- If you know someone who is about to drive impaired, take his or her keys and help make other transportation arrangements.

"Your best and only defense against drunk drivers is to always wear a seat belt and remain attentive to your surroundings and other drivers," Lt. Haight said.

Idaho County Deputy officer involved shooting

On November 16, 2010, in Riggins, the Idaho County Sheriffs Office attempted to serve a felony warrant out of El Paso County, Colorado, on Curtis Scrivner. At that time, Scrivner brandished a weapon and fled. The Idaho County Sheriffs Response Team, assisted by the Idaho State Police, was unable to locate Scrivner. On November 17, 2010, the Idaho County Sheriffs Office received information that Scrivner was observed at a construction site about five miles east of Riggins on Big Salmon Road. Four Idaho County Deputies responded to the area. At about 7:30 a.m., upon approaching the construction site, the Deputies were fired upon by Scrivner. It became necessary for the Deputies to use deadly force in order to stop Scrivners deadly assault. As a result, Deputy Fred Carey was wounded and Scrivner received fatal injuries. Deputy Carey was transported by ambulance to the McCall Hospital then airlifted to St. Als in Boise. Deputy Carey is currently in stable condition. IDAHO STATE POLICE NEWS RELEASE
Region 3 Patrol 700 S. Stratford, Meridian 83642
(208) 884-7019
Fax (208) 884-7087

For Immediate Release: 11/09/2010 4:30 PM
Contact: Joe Tueller

The Idaho State Police is announcing its decision to open the Trooper position and will hire approximately 15 new Troopers Statewide.

The hiring process takes between six and seven months to complete, starting with a comprehensive online exam and oral board, once exams have been scored. Applicants must then pass an extensive background check that includes references, work, criminal history, and credit checks. Applicants must also pass a series of psychological, medical, and physical fitness exams. A polygraph exam and substance abuse screening will be administered as well.

The training process on average takes about nine months to complete. The training includes a 10 week POST academy in addition to a 12 to 13 week ISP advanced training academy. Upon successful completion of both academies, the new recruit will enter into on the job field training for a period of time with experienced Troopers. Both the academy and on the job training are intense and require physically and mentally strong individuals.

Applicants must be willing to work anywhere in the state of Idaho and while ISP does attempt to accommodate the applicants choice of location, they first focus on department needs when placing new Troopers.

Because travel is constant in Idaho, anytime of the day or year, Troopers will be required to work all shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Applicants must also be a high school graduate or possess a GED. They must also have two or more years of responsible work experience or two years of higher education beyond high school. Starting pay for the Trooper position is $17.67 per hour, and possibly higher if the candidate is a current police officer with at least three years experience as a sworn officer.

Interested applicants can read more detail about this exciting opportunity and/or apply online by visiting the ISP website at: www.isp.idaho.gov . The job posting will only be open for a short time, closing on November 21, 2010.
