At approximately 06:42 this morning, Officer Barker of the Idaho Falls Police Department was northbound on US91 between mileposts 119 and 120, near Shelley. At that time, the officer was nearly struck by a Dodge pickup traveling southbound and Officer Barker turned around in order to pull the vehicle over. The driver of the pickup, Carl Kiser, age 41 of Idaho Falls, was losing consciousness as a result of an undisclosed medical issue and was driving off the roadway. Fearing a head-on crash was about to occur, Officer Barker came alongside Kiser' pickup and used his patrol vehicle to prevent Kiser from coming back onto the roadway and Kiser's pickup came to rest on the train tracks. Kiser was evaluated on-scene by emergency medical personnel but was not transported. The investigation is continuing by Corporal Murdock of the Idaho State Police.
