FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - ZERO TOLERANCE FOR IMPAIRED DRIVERS - NEW YEARS TRAVEL TIPS

IDAHO STATE POLICE
REGION 6
1540 FOOTE DRIVE
IDAHO FALLS IDAHO 83402

208-525-7377

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Idaho State Police reminds motorists to make this holiday season safer for everyone by choosing to not drive while impaired. Last year, 96 people died in impaired-driving crashes on Idaho's highways.

"Local law enforcement agencies have a zero tolerance for impaired drivers, and we will all be out in force this New Years Eve," said Lt. Chris Weadick with ISP. "We want people to celebrate the New Year, and if you have had too much to drink, please use a sober driver or call a taxi," said Weadick.

Violators can face jail time, the loss of their driver's license, higher insurance rates and many unanticipated expenses like attorney's fees, fines and court costs, towing and repairs, and lost time at work.

Lt. Weadick offered tips to make the holiday party season safer.

DUI PREVENTION:

The Idaho State Police joins other law enforcement agencies to provide these tips to help make holiday party season safer:

* Make plans to not drink and drive before you start drinking. Alcohol impairs a person's judgment. You can't count on making the right decision after you've started drinking!

* Whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver before you leave and give that person your keys.

* If you are impaired, call a taxi or sober friend or family member to get you home safely. Some taxi services may offer free or discounted rides to party goers during the holiday season.

* When entertaining, offer non-alcoholic beverages.

* Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement by calling 9-1-1 or *ISP

* Wear your safety belt while in your car and ensure your passengers are buckled up too.

* If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take his or her keys and help make other safe travel arrangements.

* Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for the latest conditions on the state highway or interstate system.

For on-camera or phone interviews about ISP's New Year's efforts, contact Lt. Chris Weadick at 525-7377.

For Immediate Release: December 22, 2009 5:00 p.m.

Treacherous conditions along Interstate 84 from Boise to Mountain Home on Tuesday morning made for a tough commute for many. Between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. the Idaho State Police investigated 11 slide-offs and 8 crashes between mileposts 57, the eastern Boise city limit, and milepost 90, the first Mountain Home exit. Three of the crashes caused injuries to the drivers or other occupants.

At approximately 6:12 a.m., troopers investigated a one-vehicle rollover eastbound on Interstate 84 at milepost 66 near the East Boise Port of Entry. Adam Bell, 25 of Mountain Home, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 in a 2002 Dodge Durango when for reasons still being investigated he lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll. Bell was transported to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. This crash was investigated by Trooper Chase.

At 7:24 a.m., a trooper came across a jack-knifed semi-truck that was partially blocking the left lane of westbound Interstate 84 at milepost 74, near the Simco Rd. interchange. The left lane of traffic was blocked for approximately 90 minutes while officers and tow operators worked to removed the semi-truck.

At 7:41 a.m., a trooper investigated a one-vehicle rollover eastbound on Interstate 84 at milepost 81, about 9 miles west of Mountain Home. Jose A. Mendez, 29 of Bliss, was traveling west on Interstate 84 in a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup with seven occupants when the vehicle left the roadway into the median and overturned. At least one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle and all of the occupants were initially transported to Elmore Medical Center via ground ambulance, and three were later taken to St. Alphonsus RMC in Boise with critical injuries.

At 9:37 a.m., a disabled semi blocked the right lane of traffic for approximately 30 minutes eastbound I-84 at milepost 61 near the East Boise rest area. Other traffic lanes were blocked at various locations throughout the morning due to crash investigations and tow trucks working to recover vehicles.

The Idaho State Police reminds motorists to drive for conditions by reducing speeds and substantially increasing following distances when driving on snow and ice-covered roads, and being certain your vehicle, including its tires, are in good condition.

Also, remember not to use your vehicle?s cruise control feature when slick road conditions are present. It is surprising how many crashes are investigated where cruise control was being used on snowy or icy roads. By the time the driver realizes that their vehicle is losing traction, it is often too late to disengage the cruise control to try and regain control of the vehicle.

As always, one of your absolute best defenses is to wear your seat belt and ensure that passengers in your car do the same.

The Idaho State Police and Clark County Sheriff's Office seized $30,343.00 on December 17, 2009 while conducting follow up investigation on a traffic crash that occurred on December 13, 2009 on I-15 milepost 175.8 (South of Spencer). Idaho State Police Cpl. Wayne Scoggins and Clark County Sheriff's Deputy Carl Scoggins investigated a single vehicle roll over in which the occupants had left the scene prior to law enforcements' arrival. On December 17, 2009, Cpl. Scoggins made arrangements to meet with California resident Anthony Serna (33 years of age) the driver from the crash that occurred on December 13, 2009 at the Clark County Sheriff's Office. Serna was traveling with California resident Donald Javaux (38 years of age) who was a passenger in the crash, and Montana resident Thomas Mahan (21 years of age) who was not involved in the crash. Further investigation by Cpl. On Saturday, November 28, 2009, at 6:30p.m., Idaho State Police investigated a one-vehicle rollover just east of Wendell. Micah Spillman, age 23 from Hyrum, UT, was driving east on Interstate 84 near the 150 mile marker, when he swerved to miss a deer in the road. He overcorrected, drove off the roadway, then drove back on the roadway where the Honda Element he was driving flipped. The vehicle came to rest in the roadway on its wheels. Spillman and his passenger, 21 year old Catherine Spillman of Logan, UT, were both wearing seatbelts and were not injured. Speed was a factor in this crash.

The crash is under investigation by Trooper Travis DeBie with assistance from Trooper Troy DeBie, Trooper M. Wendler, Gooding County Sheriff's Office and Wendell City Police Department.

In addition, two more crashes occurred as a result of vehicles running over debris from the initial crash. The debris caused minor damage to both cars. Gooding County Sheriff's Office handled these crashes.

Idaho State Police would like to remind everyone, during this holiday season, to take your time, slow down and wear your seatbelt. Arrive safely at your destination.

Driving safely... so easy everyone should do it

Many think aggressive drivers are only those who display their aggression with such acts as tailgating, cutting in front of other vehicles, or expressing their impatience with rude hand-gestures or verbal harangues. While these acts certainly are among the most egregious forms of aggressive driving, Corporal Aaron Bingham and Trooper Tyler Barrett of the Idaho State Police say motorists driving over the speed limit, driving a vehicle without properly functioning equipment, talking or texting on cell phones, and even eating while driving, are also considered aggressive drivers.

"When your attention is not 100 percent focused on the act of driving, the chances of you being involved in a vehicle crash rise dramatically," Barrett said. "When you mix driving at freeway speeds of 75 m.p.h. with lack of attention, the results can be deadly."

Bingham and Barrett are members of the Region 4 Idaho State Police Aggressive Driver Strike Team. This week, ISP troopers will be out in force on the day before Thanksgiving, with the stated goal of working toward a "zero fatality" holiday weekend. Region 4 has investigated five fatality crashes in the past seven weeks, all of which occurred due to some form of aggressive driving.

"With the increased volume of traffic we expect over the Thanksgiving weekend, people need to be especially careful," Barrett said. "Among the easiest ways to avoid a crash is to slow down. For people involved in a crash, the chances of surviving are increased many-fold simply by buckling up."

Last year, on the day before Thanksgiving, Region 4 Troopers conducted 245 calls for service. These calls included 198 traffic stops, 3 vehicle accidents, 31 motorist assists, 3 agency assists, and 10 calls for abandoned vehicles, traffic hazards, etc.

"People need to understand when they drive aggressively they are not only endangering themselves, they are endangering every other motorist. The effects and consequences of a fatality or serious injury accident are far reaching. Such a tragedy seems even more profound when it occurs during the holiday season."

Barrett says there are many ways to avoid becoming an aggressive driver or being the victim of an aggressive driver.

"Make sure you're rested before you begin travelling. Make sure you know what route your taking, and give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination," Barrett said. "Most importantly, treat other drivers the way you want to be treated. If you do witness an aggressive driving incident, don't take matters into your own hands. Call and report the incident as quickly as possible."

Motorists can report aggressive drivers by calling *477.
